Wichita Wingnuts News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the St. Paul Saints at Midway Stadium on Thursday night.

The Wingnuts took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and held the lead through the end of the game thanks to great pitching from Nick Singleton and three relievers.

Ryan Patterson bunted for a single with one out in the first and advanced to second on Josh Petersen's throwing error on the same play. Patterson moved to third on a single to left by Jorge Cortes. Jackson Melian hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Patterson to give the Wingnuts an early lead for a second straight night.

The Wingnuts scored twice in the top of the fifth after there were two outs and no one on base. Josh Horn singled down the right field line. Patterson followed with an RBI double to right-center field that scored Horn. Patterson came around when Cortes singled down the right field line, extending the lead to 3-0.

Flint Wipke led off the bottom of the fifth with a double to left field. After Josh Petersen fouled out to first, Steve Mays hit a groundball to third that took a bad hop on Michael Thompson, who recovered and threw to first. Mays was initially called out, but the umpires reversed the decision saying that first baseman Steve Pearson came off the bag fielding Thompson's throw.

With Wipke on third and Mays on first, Josh Alley hit a line drive to left that was dropped by Jackson Melian. Wipke scored to make it 3-1, but Melian recovered in time to get the force on Mays at second base.

The teams traded runs in the sixth inning. Rene Ruiz singled home Jeff Christy with second and third and one out to give the Wingnuts a 4-1 lead. Brent Krause scored on a wild pitch with by Nick Singleton with two outs in the bottom of the inning to pull the Saints back within two.

Singleton went 6.1 strong innings for the win, allowing two earned runs on just three hits. Singleton struck out a season-high nine batters while walking five.

Dustin Pease struck out Jason Cooper with the tying runs on base to end the bottom of the seventh. Cephas Howard worked around a leadoff single in the eighth to strike out two and set it up for Justin Dowdy who earned his 12th save of the season with a scoreless inning.

Saints starter Kyle Foster allowed four runs, three earned in six innings while taking the loss. It marked the first time this season the Wingnuts won consecutive games on the road as well as the first time the team has taken the rubber game of a series.

The Wingnuts return home for a four-game series versus Grand Prairie on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Adam Cowart takes the mound in the series opener for the Wingnuts.
