St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (July 7, 2010) - As the second half gets under way the St. Paul Saints are busy as they signed outfielders Edgard Clemente, nephew of Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente and Chad Gabriel. The Saints also removed pitcher Payton Tweddale from the disabled list and released pitcher Ashton Dorris and outfielder Andrew Schmiesing.
The 34-year-old Clemente began his professional career in 1993 as a 10th round pick by the Colorado Rockies. He moved through the system and made it to the Major League's in 1998 where he went 6-17 with two RBI. In 1999 he spent 57 games with the Rockies and hit .253 with eight homers and 25 RBI. His final stint at the Major League level came in 2000 with the Anaheim Angels where he hit .218 with five RBI in 46 games.
Clemente spent the last two seasons, including 2010, in the Mexican League. This year with Broncos de Reynosa he was hitting .364 with three homers and 13 RBI in 21 games. In 77 at bats he scored 23 runs, had a .427 on base percentage and slugged .584.
His uncle Roberto played 18 seasons in the Major Leagues and is the only player to finish his career with exactly 3,000 career hits before dying in a plane crash while en route to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. He was elected to the Hall of Fame posthumously in 1973.
The Saints also signed outfielder Chad Gabriel. The 26-year-old Gabriel was claimed off of waivers from the Grand Prairie Air Hogs (American Association) where he was hitting .277 with 20 RBI in 42 games. In 173 at bats he scored 23 runs, had seven doubles, slugged .318 and had an on base percentage of .302.
Gabriel was a 20th round selection by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2004 and spent three seasons in their organization.
Pitcher Tweddale came off the disabled list. He is 0-1 with a 6.09 ERA in 19 relief appearances.
Schmiesing was released after hitting .140 with six RBI in 19 games.
Dorris was also released pitching in just one game going 3.0 innings and allowing seven runs on 10 hits.
The Saints roster stands at the league maximum 22 players, 10 pitchers and 12 position players.
