St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (July 8, 2010) - The St. Paul Saints donned special tuxedo uniforms on Second Chance Prom Night at the ballpark on Thursday night, but their play didn't quite live up to their appeareance. The Wichita Wingnuts grabbed one run in the first inning and didn't look back, leading the entire game en route to a 4-2 victory in front of 3,744 fans at Midway Stadium.
Saints starter Kyle Foster gave his team 6.0 solid innings of work, giving up four runs on the night, but the offense was never able to take off against Wingnuts starter Nick Singleton. Singleton fanned nine batters in 6.1 innings and didn't give up a hit until Flint Wipke doubled to lead off the bottom of the fifth.
The Saints were the team scoring early in the first two games of the series, but it was the Wingnuts taking charge from the start Thursday night. Jackson Melian plated Ryan Patterson with a sacrifice fly in the first, giving his team a 1-0 lead right off the bat.
The visiting team would add to their lead in the fifth when Ryan Patterson's two-out double plated Josh Horn. Patterson would score shortly thereafter, when Jorge Cortes' line drive found center field, making it 3-0 Wingnuts.
The Saints clawed back in the bottom half, picking up a run on a fielder's choice hit by Josh Alley. Flint Wipke scored the run after leading off the inning with a double. After the Wingnuts added a fourth run in the top of the sixth, Brent Krause crossed home in the bottom half of the inning on a wild pitch from Singleton.
It was 4-2 after six innings, but that was the full extent of the Saints' offensive output. Wingnuts All-Star closer Justin Dowdy came on to shut the door in the ninth, recording his 12th save of the year.
Thursday night's game concluded a long stretch of games between the Saints and Wingnuts, leaving a three-game series later this month in Wichita as the only other time these two teams will meet this season.
The Saints welcome the Sioux City Explorers to Midway Stadium Friday night for the first of a three-game series. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and will feature Zach Peterson for the Saints (2-3, 2.70). It will be You Don't Know Jack Night at the ballpark as Saints fans will pine for Jack Morris' induction into the Hall of Fame. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network (check saintsbaseball.com for the channel in your area) and can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
