St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - The best and brightest will be out in full force on Tuesday, July 27 in Wichita during the American Association All-Star Game and the St. Paul Saints will be represented by infielder/outfielder Jason Cooper, outfielder Brent Krause and pitcher Jake Schmidt.
The 29-year-old Cooper is hitting .337 with six homers and 34 RBI in 50 games. In 187 at bats he has a league leading 22 doubles, one triple and scored 33 runs with an on base percentage of .415 and a slugging percentage of .541. He is currently third in the league in extra base hits.
Cooper was selected in the third round of the 2002 June Amateur Draft by the Cleveland Indians and will be making his second career All-Star appearance.
The 28-year-old Krause continues to put up solid numbers with the Saints and, consequently, a number of franchise records have become his this season. He is hitting .311 with four homers and 29 RBI in 50 games. In 180 at bats he has 15 doubles, three triples (tied for third in the league), scored 31 runs while swiping seven bases. He has an on base percentage of .398 and is slugging .454.
This is the fourth consecutive All-Star game selection for Krause. He was selected as a utility/reserve player by North Division Manager Marty Scott of the Lincoln Saltdogs. Krause has set Saints franchise records this season for doubles, extra base hits, hits, games played, at bats, walks, strikeouts and triples. He is currently two stolen bases shy of breaking that mark.
The 21-year-old Schmidt makes his first All-Star Game appearance in just his second professional season. He is 6-3 with a 3.02 ERA in 12 games (nine starts). In 65.2 innings pitched he's walked 24 and struck out 55 while opponents are hitting just .239 against him. He is currently third in the league in ERA, tied for fourth in wins and strikeouts.
Schmidt was a 41st round selection of the Chicago Cubs in the 2009 June Amateur Draft and pitched two games at the Rookie Level. He is a graduate of Concordia-St. Paul and was named Daktronics All-America honorable mention, ABCA/Rawlings and Daktronics Central Region Pitcher of the Year, NSIC Pitcher of the Year, ABCA/Rawlings All-America Third Team selection and Concordia University Athlete of the Year in 2009.
