Binghamton Senators News Release
OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators today recalled defenceman Tomas Malec from the club's American Hockey League affiliate, the Binghamton Senators, on an emergency basis to replace Anton Volchenkov, who is out with a stiff neck. This is Malec's second call-up to the Ottawa Senators.
In his début with the Senators, replacing then suspended Zdeno Chara, the 23-year-old had 14 shifts over 10:08 of time-on-ice along with a team-high +3 rating (with Andrej Meszaros) in Ottawa's 6-3 win over the Panthers in Florida on Dec. 5.
Malec has played 44 NHL career games, recording two assists and 45 penalty minutes with Ottawa and the Carolina Hurricanes. The Skalica, Slovakia, native was signed as a free agent by Ottawa in August 2005.
Playing in all 73 games this season in Binghamton, Malec has one goal, 21 assists, 114 penalty minutes and a -22 in the plus-minus rating.
Binghamton is fifth in the East Division with 33 wins, 33 losses, four overtime and four shootout losses for 74 points. With six regular-season games remaining, the club is nine points out of a playoff position behind the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The B-Sens' next game is Friday, April 7, when they play host to the Tigers.
