Senators Beat Pirates 3-1

Portland, Maine - The Binghamton Senators dealt the Pirates a 3-1 loss at the Cumberland County Civic Center as Jeff Glass stopped 38 of 39 Pirates shots to help his Senators earn the win.

The Senators jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 14:34 of the first period when Bryan McGregor scored his first goal of the year in his first game with the Senators. McGregor's tally was assisted by Neil Petruic and Mark Bomersback and was the lone goal of the first period.

In the second, the Senators extended their lead when Matt Taormina took a pass on the left wing and put a quick shot past Pirates netminder Kellen Briggs. Taormina's goal was his first professional goal and came in his first professional game. Ilya Zubov and Marc Cavosie got the assists. The Pirates answered a few minutes later when Derek Whitmore took a pass from Marc-Andre Gragnani at the top of the slot and beat Senators goaltender Jeff Glass on a wrister. Whitmore's 9th goal of the season was assisted by Gragnani and Mike Kostka at 14:22 of the second period. The Pirates went into the third period trailing the Senators 2-1.

Binghamton stretched its lead to 3-1 when Kellen Briggs made an initial shot but Senators captain Denis Hamel poked the rebound home for his 23rd goal of the season. Matt Pope got the only assist on the goal at 3:14 of the third period on the power play. The Pirates threw 17 shots on net in the third period alone, but Jeff Glass stopped them all to preserve the 3-1 Senators win.

Pirates goaltender Kellen Briggs made 23 saves on 26 shots but took the loss. Senators netminder Jeff Glass stopped 38 of 39 Pirates shots to pick up the win.

Notes: The Pirates now have just two games remaining against opponents outside the Atlantic Division... Attendance: 3,785.
