AHL Board of Governors upholds suspension of Norfolk's Steve Downie
Published on March 10, 2009 under American Hockey League (AHL) News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ... The American Hockey League's Board of Governors has unanimously voted to uphold the League suspension levied against Norfolk Admirals right wing Steve Downie last week. The Board convened via conference call this afternoon to hear the Admirals' appeal.
Downie was suspended for twenty (20) games on Mar. 5 under the provisions of AHL Rule 41.2 for deliberately striking an official with his stick during a Feb. 28 game at Hershey.
The Board determined that the application of AHL Rule 41.2 was appropriate. That rule reads:
Any player or goalkeeper who deliberately strikes an official and causes injury or who deliberately applies physical force in any manner against an official with intent to injure, or who in any manner attempts to injure an official shall be automatically suspended for not less than twenty (20) games. (For the purpose of the rule, "intent to injure" shall mean any physical force which a player or goalkeeper knew or should have known could reasonably be expected to cause injury.)
In addition, the Board of Governors found that the League's investigation was comprehensive, and that the disciplinary process was conducted in full compliance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the American Hockey League and its players, as well as with the provisions set forth in the League's Constitution, By-Laws and Regulations.
Downie remains eligible to return to the Norfolk lineup on Apr. 11.
