HOUSTON, Texas - Benoit Pouliot led off the Houston Aeros three unanswered goals to earn a 3-1 win over the Quad City Flames Tuesday night at Toyota Center. The win was Houston's tenth in its last 12 games, extending the Aeros second-place lead to three points. Quad City will remain in Houston until Friday when the teams meet again in a 7:35 p.m. contest.
Quad City got on the board first for the sixth straight game against the Aeros with a power-play goal at 12:43 in the first period. Brandon Roach put a hard shot on net from the point and the puck was tipped by David Van der Gulik just past Nolan Schaefer's glove for the 1-0 lead. Center Justin Bowers earned the second assist for his fifth point of the season. Shots in the period were in favor of the Flames 7-6, however Houston recorded the first five shots of the game before Quad City reeled off seven consecutive shots.
The Aeros tied the game less the one minute into the second period when Pouliot scored his third goal with Houston at the :56 mark. Jesse Schultz fed Pouliot as he came into the zone on the left wing, Pouliot then wristed the shot far corner past the glove of Flames' netminder Leland Irving.
Krys Kolanos tallied his team-leading 23rd goal of the season at the 14:15 mark to give the Aeros their first lead of the game. Kolanos tipped a shot by Aeros' defenseman Maxim Noreau under the armor of Irving for the 2-1 lead. The Aeros killed the only power play in the period on Noreau's slashing at the 6:53 mark. After two periods only three penalties were called and Houston held on to a 2-1 lead.
Houston kept the Flames at bay during the third period, only allowing five shots on net to the Aeros eight. Houston earned two power-plays in the period but couldn't convert on any of the three total man advantages in the contest. Late in the third period Irving was looking to the bench waiting for the call to be pulled in favor of an extra attacker but Houston forced the puck back into the Flames' zone to keep him in goal. After a scrum near the front of the net the puck was kicked out to Clayton Stoner near the blue line.
