Sea Dogs Sweep Yard Goats in Doubleheader

Portland, ME- The Portland Sea Dogs swept the Hartford Yard Goats in doubleheader winning 7-2, and 1-0 on Tuesday night at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine. In the first game, Sea Dogs infielder Bobby Dalbec broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning with an RBI double and Tate Matheny followed with a three-run home run to highlight a five-run inning. Portland starter Denyi Reyes fired six scoreless innings in the night-cap and limited Hartford to just three hits. The Yard Goats had a runner at second base when the game ended. Tyler Nevin cracked a two-run double, and Manny Melendez had a pair of hits off former Yard Goats pitcher Konner Wade. It was the first time this season that the Sea Dogs have defeated the Yard Goats in a series. Hartford will try and avoid a sweep in the finale of the road trip tomorrow afternoon (12:00) in southern Maine.

In game one, the Sea Dogs took a 1-0 lead on Luke Tendler's RBI single in the second inning off Hartford starter Jack Wynkoop. Portland made it 2-0 with a two out rally in the third. Bobby Dalbec ripped a double and eventually scored on two errors in the inning.

The Yard Goats tied the game with a two out rally of their own off former Yard Goats pitcher and Portland starter Konner Wade. Manny Melendez and Vance Vizcaino singled, and Tyler Nevin smashed a double to the centerfield fence scoring both and tying the game at 2-2.

The Sea Dogs put together a five-run fifth inning by sending ten batters to the plate and collecting seven hits in the frame. Jaren Duran led off with a bunt single and CJ Chatham singled. Dalbec followed with a double to right scoring Duran for a 3-2 lead. Joey Curletta continued the uprising with an RBI single to make it 4-2. Then Tate Matheny belted a three-run homer into the Maine Monster net to give the Sea Dogs a 7-2 lead. Eduard Bazardo retired all four batters faced in relief to get the win.

In game two, Sea Dogs pitcher Denyi Reyes was dominant and permitted just three baserunners over the first six innings, two singles and a walk. He retired the side in order in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Portland scored the only run of the game in the fourth inning as Joey Curletta came in on a double play grounder by Tate Matheny.

The Yard Goats wrap up their two-city seven-game road trip on Wednesday afternoon at 12:00 in Portland, Maine against the Red Sox affiliate, the Portland Sea Dogs. The game will be broadcast on AM 1410 WPOP and 100.9 FM and streamed on newsradio.1410.com and MiLB.com. The Yard Goats return to Dunkin' Donuts Park in Hartford for their next homestand on Thursday, July 25th and host the Akron RubberDucks at 7:05 PM.
