Thunder, 'Ducks Split Tuesday Twin Bill

July 23, 2019 - Eastern League (EL1)
Trenton Thunder News Release

The Thunder split a doubleheader with the Akron RubberDucks Tuesday night, taking the opener 3-1 before falling 6-0 in the nightcap in front of a crowd of 6,342 at ARM & HAMMER Park.

In the first game, Connor Marabell gave Akron (10-23, 44-58) an early advantage with a first-inning RBI-single off Thunder (15-18, 53-45) starter Albert Abreu. The lead was short-lived, though, as Hoy Jun Park tied the game in the bottom of the first with a solo homer to right field, and after Mandy Alvarez poked a single to right, Brandon Wagner put the Thunder in front 2-1 with an RBI-double to the right-field wall.

Reliever James Reeves (4-2) earned the win, retiring all 14 batters he faced in relief of Abreu, who exited with one out in the first inning with an apparent injury. The resulting four-and-two-third innings were a season-high for Reeves. Daniel Alvarez held the RubberDucks scoreless over the final two innings to earn the save. Reeves and Alvarez retired a combined 20 of 21 batters faced, with a two-out hit batsman in the seventh inning accounting for the only Akron baserunner after the first inning.

RubberDucks starter Eli Morgan (5-2) kept the Thunder close, pitching all six innings for his team and striking out eight while limiting the Thunder to five hits.

In the second game, Akron put runners on the corners in the first inning with a two-out walk and a single off Rony Garcia. Connor Marabell stole second base, and when catcher Francisco Arcia's throw to second bounced into center field, Trenton Brooks scored from third on the play for the game's first run.

Akron capped the scoring in the top of the seventh by rallying for four insurance runs, including a two-run homer by Nolan Jones, off Andrew Bellatti.

RubberDucks left-hander Adam Scott held the Thunder to two hits over five and one-third innings, and relievers Jared Robinson and Dalbert Siri finished the final inning and two-thirds. The Thunder offense left nine runners stranded, including leaving the bases loaded in the sixth, and went 0-for-9 with RISP.

Kyle Holder went 0-for-3, ending his team-best hitting streak at 11 games.

Your Thunder conclude their homestand on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. against the RubberDucks. RHP Brian Keller (1-1, 1.74) will start for the Thunder, and LHP Sam Hentges (1-9, 5.21) will go for Akron. Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.
