August 6, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Portland Sea Dogs News Release

Portland, Maine- The Richmond Flying Squirrels took their first meeting in franchise history against the Portland Sea Dogs with a 7-4 win at Hadlock Field before 6,945 on Friday Night.

The Flying Squirrels snapped a 4-4 tie in the eighth inning by scoring three times off Mitch Herold. Conor Gillaspie hit an RBI single to bring home the eventual game winning run.

Herold (2-4) would take the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits, with a walk and a strikeout over 1.1 innings.

The win would go to Daryl Maday (9-5), who tossed 1.1 perfect innings for the Squirrels.

Picking up the big hit has been a problem for the Seas Dogs of late, in their series with Bowie, the 'Dogs were batting just .159 (7-44) with runners in scoring position despite a .327 (37-113) team average overall. But on this night, Ray Chang would double home Che-Hsuan Lin in the teams' first at-bat with a runner in scoring position to give the Sea Dogs an early 1-0 lead.

The Flying Squirrels would answer in the third on a Tyler La Torre run scoring double to tie the game 1-1.

The tie would short lived, as the Sea Dogs would score twice in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Lin would come around to score his second run of the game on a Nate Spears double. After Richmond starter David Mixon got the next two batters to strike out, Anthony Rizzo delivered a two out hit with a runner in scoring position to right-center field.

After a fielding error by Ryan Khoury at third base allowed the first batter to reach in the fifth, Kelly surrendered three straight hits that yielded two runs. The Flying Squirrels would then grab the lead on a Nick Noonan single, 4-3. Luckily, for Kelly and the Sea Dogs, Thomas Neal's line drive was hit right to Ray Chang who doubled off the runner at first to put an end to any further damage.

Kelly was not fazed by the three run inning, settling in to retire the final six batters he faced on his way to tossing a season high 6.2 innings. Overall, he allowed four runs (3 earned) on seven hits, with one walk and one strikeout in the no decision.

Although Kelly pitched well, he did leave the ballgame on the hook for a loss. Chih-Hsien Chiang prevented such an injustice when he launched his eighth home run of the year out of the ballpark to knot things up at 4-4.

Kelly's counterpart David Mixon also earned a no decision after tossing 5.0 innings and allowing three runs on five hits, he also struck out five and walked a batter.

The Sea Dogs (53-59) and Flying Squirrels (55-57) will get back at it again Saturday at 6:00PM in the second game of the three game series at Hadlock Field. Blake Maxwell (2-0, 2.25) will get the start for Portland, while lefty Clayton Taylor will take the ball for the visitors.
