Sens Keep Rolling; Win Eighth Straight

August 6, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Harrisburg Senators News Release

Josh Johnson and Marvin Lowrance hit back-to-back solo home runs to start the Harrisburg Senators night at the plate, and the Senators never looked back, beating the Altoona Curve at Metro Bank Park 6-1. The Senators scored four runs in total in the first inning, and ultimately picked up their eighth consecutive win, to improve to 60-53 on the season. The Sens remain 2.5 games out of a playoff spot.

The big first inning for the Senators saw them put the first four men on base safely, though Johnson and Lowrance didn't stay on base long. They hit their fourth and eleventh homers of the year, respectively, off of Altoona starter Jeff Locke (1-1) to lead off the inning. Jesus Valdez then walked, and Chris Marrero doubled to move him to third base. After an Ofilio Castro sacrifice fly that scored Valdez, Adam Fox doubled in Marrero to make the score 4-0.

Altoona (65-47) answered the four-run first with one run in the second off of Senators starter Ryan Tatusko, getting an RBI single from Hector Gimenez that scored Jordy Mercer. But the Senators responded with single runs in the third and fourth innings off of Locke, extending the lead to 6-1 Devin Ivany drove in a run by getting hit by a Locke pitch with the bases loaded in the third, and Johnson scored on a double-play ball from Jesus Valdez in the fourth. That completed the scoring in the ballgame.

Tatusko went four and two-thirds innings in his first Eastern League start, allowing just one run on five hits, but gave way to Dan Leatherman with two outs in the fifth. Leatherman (1-0) earned the win in his first appearance for the Senators this season, throwing two and a third hitless innings. Locke took the loss for the Curve.

The Senators managed eight hits in the ballgame, including two apiece from Johnson and Lowrance. The other four hits came from Marrero, Castro, Fox, and Edgardo Baez. Johnson, Lowrance, Castro, Fox, and Ivany each drove in a run. For Altoona, Andrew Lambo and Jordy Mercer each collected two hits in the loss.

Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for Saturday night at 7 PM, with RHP Tanner Roark set to make his first Eastern League start for the Senators. Roark, along with Tatusko, came over from the Texas Rangers' organization in the Cristian Guzman trade last weekend. He faces LHP Justin Wilson (9-6, 3.13) of the Curve. The Senators are 5.5 games back of Altoona in the Western Division of the Eastern League, and 2.5 games behind Bowie for the second and final playoff spot. Radio coverage of Saturday's ballgame begins at 6:45 PM, on 1460 AM The Ticket and www.senatorsbaseball.com.
