Locke Picked In 6-1 Loss In Harrisburg
August 6, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release
HARRISBURG, Pa - Curve lefty Jeff Locke was unable to overcome a rocky first inning after the southpaw allowed eight batters to come to the plate and four runs come across in what eventually turned out to be a 6-1 loss to the Harrisburg Senators (AA - Washington Nationals) on Friday night at Metro Bank Park.
The loss snaps the Curve's five-game winning streak and the win for Harrisburg is their eighth in a row. With the loss, Altoona now leads the Eastern League's Western Division by just 3.0 games as the second place Bowie Baysox (62-50) were able to secure a 13-2 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Third place Harrisburg climbs to within 5.5 games of Altoona.
In his fifth Double-A start, Locke, who shut down the Senators (60-53) in his Double-A debut on July 16 struggled allowing back-to-back homers to start the game as Josh Johnson and Marvin Lowrance both went deep to give Harrisburg a 2-0 edge. After Jesus Valdez walked and Chris Marrero doubled, Locke recorded his first out of the inning when Ofilio Castro flew out to right field. The fly out scored Valdez from third and put the Senators up 3-0. The final run of the frame came across on Adam Fox's RBI double which brought home Marrero.
Altoona (65-47) would immediately answer with a run in the top of the second. Jordy Mercer crossed the plate with Altoona's only run of the game on a Hector Gimenez RBI single which brought Altoona within three, 4-1.
Locke would hit Devin Ivany with a pitch while the bases were loaded in the third and Johnson, who led off the fourth inning with a double, would eventually score on a 6-4-3 double play turned by Altoona to extend Harrisburg's lead to 6-1. Locke allowed six runs on eight hits over 5.0 innings of work. He struck out three and walked three while throwing 73 pitches.
Despite Dustin Molleken tossing 3.0 scoreless innings and facing the minimum, Altoona could not plate another run in the game despite having plenty of chances. The Curve stranded 11 base runners in the contest.
The Altoona Curve will look to even the series on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. RHP Bryan Morris (5-4, 4.21) will make the start for Altoona against Tanner Roark (NR), who will make his Senators debut after being acquired in a trade from the Texas Rangers in the Christian Guzman deal. Airtime on flagship radio station ESPN 1430, WVAM and Altoona Curve Radio Network affiliates is 6:30 p.m.
