Chesapeake Baysox News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Bowie Baysox tallied 15 hits on their way to a 13-2 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Friday night. Third baseman Ryan Adams led the attack for the Baysox, going 3-for-5 with a walk, a double, a RBI and two runs scored. The double was his 40th of the year, setting a Baysox single season record. First baseman Joe Mahoney also had a big offensive night, going 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs and four runs scored.
Baysox starting pitcher Rick Zagone earned the win, holding New Hampshire to two runs over 7.0 innings on five hits and two walks while striking out seven. With the victory, he improves to 3-3 with a 3.74 ERA on the season. Raul Rivero allowed one hit in two scoreless innings of relief to close out the victory.
With the win, the Baysox improve to 62-50, 12 games over .500 for the first time since July 16, 2009. After an Altoona loss, Bowie trails the division-leading Curve by 3.0 games with 29 games left to play. The Baysox hold a 2.5 game advantage over the third place Harrisburg Senators. The top two teams in each division make the playoffs.
New Hampshire took the lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Zagone walked Adeiny Hechavarria with one out and two batters later Shawn Bowman singled to left field. Former Baysox pitcher Adam Loewen drew a walk to load the bases with two outs and David Cooper drove in the first run of the game with an infield single to shortstop. Zagone induced a groundout to get out of the inning with Bowie trailing 1-0.
The Baysox answered with a run in the top of the second inning. Mahoney hit a one-out single to right field and left fielder Brandon Waring drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Center fielder Jonathan Tucker drove a two-out single to center field, plating Mahoney and tying the game at 1-1.
Bowie added four more runs in the top of the third inning. Shortstop Greg Miclat led off with a single to left field and moved to second when the fielder failed to field the ball cleanly. Adams drew a walk and Tyler Henson hit a double to left field. Miclat scored on the double and Adams advanced to third base. Designated hitter Joel Guzman lined a single to left field, scoring Adams and advancing Henson to third base. Mahoney hit a ground ball to second base and Guzman was retired on the play, but Henson scored and Mahoney was safe at first base. With one out and Waring batting, Mahoney stole second base and scored when the left fielder doubled to left field before a pair of groundouts ended the inning with the Baysox up 5-1.
Adams hit his record-setting 40th double in the top of the fourth inning and scored his second run of the game when Henson singled to right field. In the bottom of the inning, Zagone allowed a solo home run to Jonathan Jaspe to cut the lead to 6-2.
After the home run, Zagone retired seven consecutive batters until Adams allowed Concepcion Rodriguez to reach on a fielding error to open the bottom of the seventh inning. Rodriguez advanced to second on the play and Jaspe lined a single to left field to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Jonathan Diaz followed with a ground ball to Adams at third base. Adams threw to second base for one out, and second baseman Carlos Rojas threw home and Rodriguez was eventually retired in a rundown. Zagone induced another groundout off the bat of Darin Mastroianni to end the inning.
Bowie added seven runs over the final two innings to close out the victory. Mahoney singled to left field to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning, Waring was hit by a pitch and catcher Steve Lerud drew a walk to load the bases with nobody out. Tucker hit a ground ball to Hechavarria at shortstop, but Hechavarria threw the ball away. Mahoney and Waring scored on the play, Lerud wound up at third base and Tucker ended up at second base. Miclat and Adams each added an RBI single in the inning to put the Baysox up 10-2.
The offense continued rolling in the top of the ninth inning. Mahoney led off with a home run to right field. Waring hit his second double of the game down the right field line and Lerud capped the scoring a two-run home run to left-center field.
The Baysox face the Fisher Cats twice more this season, Saturday and Sunday in New Hampshire. After an off day Monday, the Baysox return home for a three game home stand against the Portland Sea Dogs, class Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. That series includes a spectacular fireworks show on Tuesday, August 10, for Navy Night and Orioles Pride Night on August 12.
