Jaspe Powers Fisher Cats in 13-2 Loss

August 6, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

Jonathan Jaspe went 3 for 4 with a homerun but the Fisher Cats fell 13-2 to the Bowie Baysox in front of 5,693 Friday at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.

Jaspe's solo homerun chipped into a deficit to bring the score to 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two-outs, Jaspe hit his second blast of the season over the left field fence on the first pitch he saw from Bowie starter and winner Rick Zagone (3-3, 3.74).

The Fisher Cats (66-47) jumped ahead in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 advantage. After a single by Shawn Bowman (2 for 4) was sandwiched between two walks to load the bases, David Cooper made the shortstop range far enough to his right to record a RBI infield single. Adam Loewen made this possible by scampering into second standing up to beat the would-be force out to end the inning.

Bowie (61-51) tied the game right back up in the top of the second at one apiece. Joe Mahoney, who reached on a single to right, came around to score on Jonathan Tucker's dribbler up the middle.

The Baysox took the lead for good in the top of the third by scoring four runs on four hits and a walk to take the 5-1 edge. The frame was highlighted by a pair of RBI doubles by Tyler Henson and Brandon Waring.

Bowie scored in the top of the fourth for the third consecutive inning. With two outs and no one on, Ryan Adams got it started with a double to right before Henson drove him home with a RBI single to widen the gap to 6-1.

New Hampshire starter Rey Gonzalez (2-3, 7.49) received the loss after finishing his outing through six innings, allowing six runs on nine hits, while striking out five and walking two.

Danny Farquhar came in as relief and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning, but could only record one out in the eighth before handing the ball over. The Baysox batted around in the frame, scoring four runs off Farquhar, two of which were unearned, bringing the score to 10-2.

Ron Uviedo got the Fisher Cats out of the jam in the eighth, leaving two inherited runners on base, but gave up a solo-shot to Mahoney and a two-run job by Steve Larud in the ninth to put New Hampshire in a 13-2 hole.

Zagone got credited with the victory after producing the quality start. The imposing southpaw, standing 6'4" and weighing 210 pounds, pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out seven and walking one.

Eric Thames went 0-for-4 and saw his 15-game hit streak come to an end for New Hampshire.

The homestand continues at Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Saturday with the middle game of a three-game set with Bowie. New Hampshire ace Kyle Drabek (11-9, 3.04) will take the mound and will be opposed by Bowie starter Chorye Spoone (7-5, 3.86). Fisher Cats Pre-Game begins at 6:45 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Dave Collins.

Atlas Fireworks Show follows the game. Fans will be playing USA Subs Baseball Bingo, as well as celebrating Renew Your Wedding Vows Night at the ballpark. For ticket information, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
