New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - Akron's Scott Barnes took the mound with his own personal fan section in New Britain Stadium and turned in a start that kept them cheering. Barnes fired seven shutout innings as the Aeros held off the Rock Cats in the ninth for a 2-1 win before a sellout crowd of 7,268. It was the 16th sellout of the season for the Rock Cats.
Barnes (6-8), a native of Chicopee, Mass., struck out eight while limiting the Rock Cats to two hits.
The Aeros took an early lead in the top of the first against Chris Province, who allowed two consecutive singles to Jordan Henry (3-for-4) and Jason Kipnis to open the game. Lonnie Chisenhall then delivered a sacrifice fly to center field scored Henry for the first run of the game. Beau Mills followed with a base hit into right before Kipnis crossed home plate on a groundout by John Drennen for a 2-0 advantage.
The Rock Cats were held scoreless until the bottom of the ninth. Steve Singleton reached base on a one-out walk to bring the tying run in Joe Benson - the team's home run leader - to the plate. Benson brought the crowd to its feet with a fly ball to left field that was handled by Cristo Arnal for the second out. Chris Parmelee kept the inning alive with a base hit to right before Juan Portes drew a walk to load the bases. Connor Graham forced Erik Lis to ground to third baseman Lannie Chisenhall, but a fielding error kept the inning alive and allowed Singleton to score the Rock Cats' first run. Graham then struck out Alexander Soto to notch his second save of the season.
Province (5-4) was making his first start as a Rock Cat and first professional start since the 2008 season. He scattered eight hits through four innings. The Rock Cats bullpen trio of Cole DeVries (3K, 1 H, 2 IP), Tony Davis (1 2/3 perfect innings), and Carlos Gutierrez kept New Britain in the game with a combined five shutout innings in relief.
