Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY - Christian Scott was über-impressive yet again for the Syracuse Mets, striking out ten more batters in a brilliant five-inning outing on Wednesday night at NBT Bank Stadium. The Mets bullpen backed Scott up from there, earning Scott his first Triple-A win and Syracuse a hard-earned, 3-2 win over the Worcester Red Sox on Wednesday night. In just nine innings pitched across two starts this season, Scott has struck out a league-leading 19 batters.
Syracuse (5-5) gave Scott some early run support with two quick ones in the bottom of the first. It took three batters to score the two runs. First, Luisangel Acuña led off the frame with a laser-beam, line-drive triple that rolled all the way to the wall in right-center field. Then, after a Ben Gamel pop out, Mark Vientos crushed a two-run homer way beyond the right-field fence to power the Mets to a 2-0 lead. Vientos now has three home runs this season, all of which have gone to the opposite field.
Worcester (4-6) did get on the board in the top of the second inning with a solo home run from Nathan Hickey to lead off the frame and cut the Syracuse lead to one, 2-1. This is the second straight game Hickey has had a homer.
The Mets extended their lead in the fifth when Yolmer Sánchez singled leading off the frame and scored on a two-out José Iglesias RBI double. From there, the Christian Scott show took center stage. The top pitching prospect in the New York Mets minor-league system, fresh off striking out nine batters in his initial Triple-A start last week at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, upped himself on Wednesday night. The former Florida Gator struck out ten batters in five innings on just two hits, allowing one run, and one walk. Scott struck out six of the ten batters he faced swinging.
Then, the Syracuse bullpen ensured Scott would end his night with a win. Yacksel Ríos, Nate Lavender, and Grant Hartwig combined to toss the final four innings of the ballgame, allowing just one run on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
The Red Sox did not go down without a fight. Worcester got a run back in the sixth on a Nick Sogard solo home run to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
Worcester nearly tied the game in the ninth, loading the bases off of Hartwig with a one-out walk, a single, and a batter reaching on catcher's interference. However, Hartwig hunkered down from there, retiring the next two batters in order to seal the win for Syracuse.
Syracuse continues its six-game series against the Worcester Red Sox at NBT Bank Stadium on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Right-hander Dom Hamel expected to take the mound for the Mets.
