Manchester Monarchs News Release
El Segundo, CA - The Los Angeles Kings (NHL) have recalled center Chris Schmidt from the Manchester Monarchs (AHL). Kings Senior Vice President/General Manager Dave Taylor made the announcement today.
Schmidt, 26, is the latest in a long line of recent recalls by the Monarchs parent club. The injury-plagued Kings, who play tonight at STAPLES Center against the Philadelphia Flyers, promoted Schmidt after placing center Brian Smolinski on the injured reserve list (Retroactive to December 27) with an eye laceration. Schmidt is the fourth player recalled by the Kings in less than a week, joining Steve Kelly, Jared Aulin and Jerred Smithson on the big club. Smolinski, 31, has appeared in 35 games for the Kings this season recording 20 points (7g, 13a) and 18 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-1, 208-pound native of Toledo, OH, was injured in the second period of the Kings-Phoenix Coyotes game on December 26 at STAPLES Center.
Schmidt, born in Beaverlodge, Alberta, has 10 goals, seven assists and 17 points in 34 games with the Monarchs this season. He also has a plus-7 rating. In 14 December games, the 6-foot-3, 215-pounder has five goals, four assists, nine points and a plus-6 rating.
Schmidt, originally drafted by the Kings in the fifth round (111th overall) of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, was a free agent signee of the Kings in April of 2001.
Last year with the Monarchs, the veteran forward notched nine goals, 12 assists and 21 points in 62 games. Schmidt has also played for the AHL's Lowell Lock Monsters (1999-00, 2000-01), Springfield Falcons (1998-99) and Fredericton Canadiens (1997-98) during his seven-year professional career.
The Kings currently have eight players on the injured reserve list with Smolinski joining center Jason Allison, center, Eric Belanger, left wing Ken Belanger, right wing Adam Deadmarsh, right wing Steve Heinze, defenseman Aaron Miller and left wing Eric Rasmussen.
The Kings (16-14-4-3, 39 points) will look to snap a two-game losing streak when they host the Philadelphia Flyers tonight (10:00 p.m. Eastern). Tonight's game will be televised on ESPN2.
The Monarchs (21-7-3-3, 48 points) return to action when they host the Hershey Bears at 4:05 p.m. on Sunday, January 5. For ticket information to future Monarchs games, call (603) 626-7825.
