
Rochester goaltender wins award after an 8-1-1 December

(Rochester, NY)... The American Hockey League announced today that Rochester Americans goaltender Ryan Miller has been named the AHL Rookie of the month for December.
The 6-2, 160-pound Miller registered an 7-1-2 record, a 1.97 goals-against average and a .942 save percentage this past month. He also recorded his first two professional shutouts in December, blanking Syracuse on 12/13 and Hershey on 12/21. Furthermore, three times he recorded 41-save efforts.
Miller is currently on recall with the Buffalo Sabres. With the Sabres this season, he has a 1-2-0 record and a 2.95 goals-against average. In the AHL, he has a 12-10-4 record, a 2.27 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage. He leads all AHL goaltenders with 1,609 minutes played and 750 saves. He is also tied for third with a .925 save percentage.
The East Lansing, Michigan, native was the Buffalo Sabres' fifth-round selection (138th overall) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Miller had a stellar collegiate career with the Michigan State Spartans, posting a 73-19-12 record, a 1.54 goals-against average and an NCAA record 26 shutouts in three seasons. He was twice nominated for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award (2001 and 2002), given to the best player in Division I hockey. He won the award in 2001, becoming only the second goalie to win the honor.
