Schaefer Returns To Barons

SAN JOSE – The San Jose Sharks announced today that the club has assigned goaltender Nolan Schaefer to the Cleveland Barons. Doug Wilson, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Sharks, made the announcement.

Schaefer was recalled by the Sharks on March 15th. He dressed in four games for the Sharks but did not see any action. This marked Schaefer's second NHL stint as he dressed for the Sharks on January 5th but did not play.

In 20 games this season with the Barons, Schaefer has posted a 10-7-2 record, a 2.41 goals-against average and .924 save percentage. The Barons have gained at least one point in 14 of his 19 starts. The team has a winning percentage of .632 by earning 23 of a possible 34 points when Schaefer is in net. He was named Barons Rookie of the Month of February after posting a 4-1-1 record, 2.14 GAA and .940 save percentage in six games. Schaefer recorded his first AHL shutout on March 10, 2004 vs. Manitoba in a 0-0 tie.

The six-foot, 200-pound goaltender from Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan graduated from Providence College and was named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team in 2001-02 and 2002-03. He was named Providence Defensive Player of the Year three times (2000-01, 2001-02 and 2002-03). Schaefer was selected by San Jose in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft (5th round, 166th overall).

In a related move, goaltender Dimitri Patzold was reassigned to Johnstown (ECHL). Schaefer is expected to be in Cleveland for the game tonight.
