Five things you absolutely need to know before reading any further –

Aeros centerman Mark Cullen has helped raise $550 for "Sunshine Kids", which helps children struck with cancer and their families. An anonymous donor is giving $100 per Cullen goal and $50 per assist to the organization. Cullen, who was diagnosed with malignant melanoma last fall, has a goal and nine assists since the campaign started March 5.

Five of the teams' last six meetings in San Antonio have gone into overtime.

Houston has 12 special teams goals (9PP, 3 SH) in the season series, while San Antonio has just five (5 PP).

The Aeros have scored five goals in each of their last two games, while San Antonio has yielded five goals in each of its last two contests.

Houston's Jeff Hoggan has a goal in each of the last four games, one off teammate Kyle Wanvig's team season-high, which is also tied for the longest such streak in the AHL this season. Prior to this run, Hoggan had scored in back-to-back games just once, in his rookie campaign of 2002-03.

Aeros at Rampage (Aeros lead all-time series 13-4-3-2, Aeros are 4-2-3-2 at San Antonio)

Tonight is the 23rd all-time meeting between the teams – 12th in San Antonio.

The road team has emerged victorious in just two of the first 10 meetings between the teams this season.

San Antonio's 2-1 home win over Houston March 13 snapped a three-game Aeros winning streak in the series.

Houston is unbeaten in regulation at SBC Center this season (1-0-2-2) and in six games (2-0-2-2) overall. The Rampage last beat the Aeros in regulation on home ice March 11, 2003, a 7-4 decision.

Five of the last six meetings, and six of 11 overall, in San Antonio have gone into overtime.

Houston went 8-3-1-0 against San Antonio in 2002-03, the Rampage's first year.

This is the 11th of 12 meetings this season.

The team that has scored first has won only four of the first 10 meetings.

In the last meeting between the teams, Paul Healey's goal 40 seconds into overtime gave the Rampage a 2-1 win. That victory was San Antonio's last. The team is 0-2-1-0 since.

Houston and San Antonio finish off the season series tomorrow at Toyota Center.

Last game – Houston's Travis Roche and Kyle Wanvig each posted a goal and an assist, and Utah's Jason Bacashihua made eight of his 36 saves in overtime in an amazing performance, as the Aeros and Grizzlies skated to a thrilling 5-5 tie at Toyota Center. Jason Beckett, Jeff Hoggan and Jordan Krestanovich each scored and Johan Holmqvist made 42 saves to finish two off his career high for Houston, which is unbeaten in its last two (1-0-1-0). Nick Naumenko and Zenon Konopka each had a goal and an assist for Utah, which has points in four of five (2-1-2-0). Mathias Tjarnqvist, Mike Siklenka and Justin Cox also scored for the Grizzlies.

Scouting the Aeros – Houston, 6-3-2-1 in its last 12, hopes to continue its march towards a Calder Cup playoff spot tonight. The Aeros are still playing without leading scorer Stephane Veilleux (12+26=38), who was recalled to Minnesota February 27. Rickard Wallin (14+17=31) and defenseman Zbynek Michalek (5+14=19) have since joined Veilleux with the Wild. Defenseman Travis Roche (8+30=38) has used four points in the last two games to vault into a tie with Veilleux for the team's scoring lead, one up on Kyle Wanvig (23+14=37) and six ahead of Dan Cavanaugh (12+20=32). Last season's Calder Cup Most Valuable Player, goalie Johan Holmqvist, has played 58 of the team's first 73 games, going 22-27-7 with a 2.61 goals against average and three shutouts. Kyle Kettles is 3-7-5 with a 2.59 goals against average but has deserved a better fate. In 14 starts, the Aeros have scored 24 goals in front of the rookie netminder.

Scouting the Rampage – San Antonio has gone 2-4-1-0 in its last seven and winless in three straight (0-2-1-0) to fall into last place in the West, a point behind Utah, which had trailed since mid December. San Antonio is four points out of the final playoff spot, currently held by Cincinnati, but has three games in hand on the Ducks. Milwaukee completed a two-game sweep of the Rampage with a resounding 5-1 win at SBC Center Tuesday. Netminder Brent Krahn and his teammates yielded five goals on 15 shots. San Antonio, though, is finally getting its full compliment of players back from NHL Florida. Leading scorer Denis Shvidki (14+34=48) spent a short time with the Panthers, as did Josh Olson (19+10=29). Lee Goren (20+20=40) is the team's second leading active scorer. The Rampage blueline is anchored by youngster Michel Periard (6+21=27). Travis Scott is the go-to goalie and sports a 21-25-6 mark with a 2.51 goals against average. Scott ranks among the league leaders in minutes, wins, losses and saves. His backup is Krahn, who is 3-5-1 with a 3.64 goals against average since being assigned to San Antonio.

Aeros/Rampage connections

Houston defenseman Erik Reitz played alongside the Rampage's Matt Dzieduszycki (1999-2001) and Denis Shvidki (1999-2000). Dzieduszycki is also a member of the Louisiana IceGators, the Aeros' ECHL affiliate.

San Antonio's Paul Elliott was a teammate of Houston netminder Kyle Kettles in Medicine Hat in 1999-2000.

Houston defenseman Travis Roche played alongside San Antonio's Lee Goren for one season (1999-2000) at North Dakota.

The Rampage's Greg Crozier played 17 games over two seasons (2001-02 and 2002-03) with the Aeros, totaling seven points (1+6=7) and 16 penalty minutes. Crozier also chipped in three points (2+1=3) in 14 Calder Cup playoff games in 2001-02 as the Aeros advanced to the Western Conference Finals.

San Antonio's Kristian Kudroc and Houston's Michael Schutte were teammates last season in Springfield.

And down the stretch they come – Houston will play eight games over the final three weeks of the season, including four big matchups in six days this week. Each of the Aeros' seven remaining games is against the West Division. Houston is 18-23-9-2 against the West this season, including an 8-9-3-1 in the last 21 games.

Aeros look for points in three straight –

Houston, coming off a wild 5-5 home tie against Utah on Tuesday, is 6-3-2-1 over its last 12 games (.625 win pct).

Houston has 11 wins in its last 41 games (11-18-10-2) and is a game above the .500 mark the last 51 games (20-19-10-2).

The Aeros' 13-game winless streak (0-5-7-1) December 27-January 23 was five more than their previous franchise record eight-game streak (0-6-1-1), November 20-December 3 of this season.

Houston ran off a season-high seven straight games without a loss (3-0-4-0) December 20-January 2, including four straight ties December 27-January 2.

The Aeros won six straight December 5-17, outscoring their opponents 18-6 in the process.

In the season's first 20 games, Houston allowed a league-worst 3.40 goals per game. In the last 53 games, the Aeros have yielded just 2.57 goals per game. The defensive streak has helped Houston move out of the basement to 2.78 goals against per game, tied for 19th in the AHL.

Trying to go back-to-back on the road –

Tonight the Aeros, 2-2-1-1 in their last six away from Toyota Center, will try to post back-to-back road wins for the second time this season. Houston's only set of back-to-back road wins came in Cincinnati and Utah on December 20 and 23.

Houston is 9-21-6-2 on the road, including a 3-13-6-0 mark in the last 22 games since December 23.

The Aeros snapped a franchise-record nine-game winless streak (0-7-2-0) February 27 with a 5-1 win in San Antonio.

The Aeros' 21 road losses are two off Springfield's AHL high.

Houston's 21 road defeats have tied its franchise record, set in 1995-96, with two games left including today. The Aeros wrap up their away slate April 9 versus Cincinnati.

"O" exploding –

The Aeros are averaging 3.13 goals per game in the last 15 games to improve to 2.45 goals per game, 17th in the AHL.

The Aeros have scored five goals in five of their last 11 games, including two straight.

Houston has been held to two goals or fewer in 27 of the last 44 games (61.4 percent), including a scoreless streak of 178 minutes, 52 seconds that included back-to-back shutouts January 8-9.

Houston has scored two goals or less in 43 of 73 games (58.9 percent) this season.

Aeros, Ducks, Rampage, Grizzlies in a playoff dog-fight – Fourth-place Houston has 66 points, four more than Cincinnati, seven better than Utah and eight up on San Antonio in the West Division. Cincinnati, which has three games in hand on the Aeros, won 2-1 in Grand Rapids Wednesday, plays host to Chicago tonight and Cleveland tomorrow, before traveling to San Antonio Sunday. Utah, which along with Houston has played 73 games, plays host to Grand Rapids tonight and tomorrow. San Antonio, which has six games in hand on Houston, finishes off the week Sunday at home versus Cincinnati after the home-and-home with the Aeros. The top five teams in the West make the playoffs, with the fourth- and fifth-place team playing a three-game qualifying series at the higher seed. Home ice will be important, since the four teams chasing the final two playoff spots are a combined 43 games under .500 on the road.

Hoggan tearing it up –

Aeros right winger Jeff Hoggan has a goal in each of his last four games, two better than his previous career-best. Hoggan has added two assists in the four-game point streak, which is one better than his prior career-high.

The rugged winger has 32 points (18+14=32), and his 18 goals are second on the team. In his rookie season in 2002-03, Hoggan totaled just 11 points (6+5=11).

In his last 15 games, Hoggan has posted a negative plus-minus rating just once, and he is plus-13 in that span to move to plus-two on the season.

Hoggan is tied for second on the team with three game-winning goals, including the important tally in two of the last four victories.

The Aeros are 15-5-5-2 when Hoggan notches a point and 8-5-3-2 when he scores a goal.

Wanvig reaches 20-goal mark – Aeros right wing Kyle Wanvig has gotten to the 20-goal plateau for the first time in his pro career. Wanvig, who scored his 20th February 28 against San Antonio, picked up No. 23 Tuesday against Utah. Wanvig has 37 total points between Houston and Minnesota, and 36 alone with the Aeros (23+13=36). Wanvig's previous career-high for goals was 14 combined (13 with Houston) last season, when he had 30 points, 29 with the Aeros.

Holmqvist gets season-high 42 saves – Aeros netminder Johan Holmqvist posted a season-best 42 saves in Tuesday's 5-5 tie against Utah. The mark was three better than his previous best this season, and just two stops off his career-best 44 save performance March 1, 2003, with Hartford against Binghamton.

Holmqvist is 5-3-1 in his last nine starts, and he has six wins (6-9-2) in his last 17 games, although the Aeros have scored just 21 goals in those 11 non-wins (1.91 gpg).

Holmqvist, the 2003 Butterfield Trophy winner as Calder Cup Playoffs MVP, sports a 27-30-7 mark with Houston.

A noted late- and post-season performer, Holmqvist's 20 March wins are his most of any month.

Holmqvist's current 2.61 goals against average is a North American career best.

Holmqvist went 6-0-0 with a 1.00 goals against average and a .963 save percentage during a six-game winning streak December 5-17. The six-game winning streak set a new career-high.

The Aeros' netminder had a shutout streak of 189 minutes, seven seconds snapped December 17, just missing Frederic Chabot's 1996 team record mark of 193 minutes, 37 seconds.

In his 22 wins this season, Holmqvist is allowing 1.09 goals per game and sports a .960 save percentage. In his 36 non-wins, Holmqvist has a 3.57 goals against average and a .875 save percentage.

Holmqvist leads the AHL in minutes played (3,407), is second in saves (1,443) and is tied for third in wins (22).

Holmqvist has played in 58 games. Arguably the most durable AHL goalie in recent memory, Holmqvist is the only goalie to play 43 or more AHL games in each of the past four seasons.

With action in two more games, Holmqvist will become only the fifth AHL goalie in the past six seasons to play in 60 or more games. Vesa Toskala (2001-02) and Jimmy Waite (1999-2000) each played in 62 games, the most since Norm Maracle's 66-game campaign in 1997-98.

Kettles wins a big one –

Rookie goalie Kyle Kettles snapped an eight appearance winless streak (0-3-5) by making 26 saves in a 5-2 win in San Antonio February 27. Kettles made a season-best 34 saves March 5 but fell 3-1 to Grand Rapids.

Kettles was 2-0-4 with a 0.95 goals against average and a .960 save percentage in six starts from December 23-January 17, dropping his goals against average from 3.65 to 2.19.

The netminder picked up his first AHL shutout by making 20 saves in a January 9 game versus Worcester. Unfortunately for Kettles, his team didn't score either and he had to settle for a tie.

The Aeros scored just 12 goals in his first 10 games this season, but they have 12 goals in his last four starts.

Mitchell gets first two-goal game –

Defenseman Kevin Mitchell not only notched his first career two-goal game in 211 professional contests March 21 in Norfolk, he also picked up the Aeros' only two-goal game by a blueliner all season.

Mitchell 21 points (5+16=21) with the Aeros, and 13 of those points have come on the power play. Last season with ECHL Louisiana, Mitchell had 23 of his 34 points with the man advantage.

Mitchell has 23 career goals counting his ECHL totals, and an eye-popping 17 have come on the power play. Six of Mitchell's eight AHL goals have come with the man advantage.

Mitchell had points in five straight games (1+5=6) for the first time in his AHL career January 23-31.

Mitchell's five-game assist streak was an Aeros season-high by two games.

The blueliner has eight points (3+5=8) over the last 11 games and 18 points (5+13=18) in the last 27 games.

Holmqvist 5-4-1 against Rampage – Aeros netminder Johan Holmqvist is 5-4-1 with a 2.41 goals against average versus San Antonio. Holmqvist is 4-2-0 with a good 1.94 goals against average against the Rampage this season and has yielded just four goals in his last three starts against San Antonio. Kyle Kettles has started against the Rampage three times, with four appearances overall. Kettles is 1-1-2 with a 2.00 goals against average versus San Antonio, with the lone loss coming in relief of Holmqvist January 16 at Toyota Center.

Scott 3-5-2 versus Aeros – San Antonio's Travis Scott is 3-5-2 with a 2.82 goals against average against the Aeros, with all 10 games coming this season. In his three wins versus Houston, his team has scored a total of 13 goals. In the other seven games, San Antonio has mustered seven goals. Former first-round pick Brent Krahn faced Houston in relief February 28, stopping all eight shots sent his way.

Heid a rookie coming into his own – Coaches will tell you that this late in the season, rookies are rookies no more. That's the case with Aeros defenseman Chris Heid, who has a goal and three assists in the last six games. Overall in the last eight games, Heid sports a plus-seven rating. Heid assisted on Jeff Hoggan's game-winning goal March 12 versus San Antonio.

The youth shall lead them – Houston's "kids" are leading the way in 2003-04. Through 73 games, nearly half of the Aeros' scoring has come from players in their first or second year in the North American pro game. Of Houston's 484 scoring points, 241 (49.8 percent) have come from players in either their first or second season in North America, while 242 (50.0 percent) have come from players born in 1980 or after. Five of the team's eight top scorers were born during the Reagan administration.

Career highs all around – You'd be hard pressed to find an Aero who hasn't set at least one AHL career-high in 2003-04. Among them: Johan Holmqvist (58 games played, 3407 minutes, 2.61 goals against average); Erik Reitz (17 assists, 21 points); Zbynek Michalek (5 goals, 14 assists, 19 points); Marc Cavosie (9 goals, 20 assists, 29 points); Dan Cavanaugh (21 assists, 33 points); Kevin Mitchell (5 goals, 16 assists, 21 points); Jeff Hoggan (18 goals, 14 assists, 32 points); Stephane Veilleux (13 AHL goals tie career high, 25 assists, 38 points); Kyle Wanvig (23 goals, 36 points); Jason Beckett (142 PIM's).

Aeros still winless in OT – The Aeros, winless at 0-4-12 in overtime, have played just four extra sessions since needing overtime in eight of 10 games from December 27-January 17. Houston is the lone AHL team without an overtime win after Utah won twice in late February in the extra session, and just one team (Cleveland) has only one overtime win. The last teams to go through a season without an overtime win were Hamilton and Hartford last season. The Aeros went 8-3-7 in overtime in 2002-03, second in the league in extra session wins (Chicago, 11). The Aeros' 12 ties are tied for the AHL lead (Portland) and still six short of the AHL/overtime era record, set in 1997-98 by St. John's. Grand Rapids (6-0-8) and San Antonio (7-0-8) are without a loss in overtime this season.

Aeros have first goal in nine of 11 games – Houston has scored the game's first goal in nine of its last 11 games. The Aeros are 19-8-6-2 overall when scoring first.

But when not scoring first... - The Aeros are 6-24-5-2 when allowing the game's first goal and picked up their first road win in such situations (1-16-4-0) March 21 in Norfolk. The game marked the first time all season Houston has trailed on the road at any point in a game and emerged victorious.

Houston has four wins when allowing more than one goal - The Aeros are an unbeaten in regulation 21-0-3-1 when allowing one or zero goals this season, and they have four wins (4-32-9-3) when yielding two or more.

Not comeback artists – Houston is one of four AHL teams without a win when trailing after two periods (0-26-6-1). The Aeros became the last team to record a win when trailing after one period (1-22-3-2) when they rallied for a 5-3 win Sunday in Norfolk. Last season, the Aeros were second in the AHL with six wins when trailing after two periods. Grand Rapids led the circuit with seven.

Penalty kill update –

The Aeros' overall 85.2 percent penalty kill rate (282-331) is 16th in the AHL, after spending much of season in the upper half of the top 10.

Houston killed off its first 31 shorthanded chances this season. Since then, opponents are 49-for-300 (16.3 percent) on the power play.

Opponents are 14-for-65 (21.5 percent) on the power play over the last 15 games and have scored 20 man-advantage goals in the last 22 games.

Houston has allowed six power play goals on 17 chances (35.3 percent goal rate) in the last four games.

The Aeros have yielded no power play goals in 37 of their 73 games, and have points in all but nine of those games (15-9-9-4).

San Antonio is tied for eighth in the AHL on the power play at 16.1 percent. However, the Rampage sports a much better road power play (league-best 18.6 percent) than home (13.7, 18th).

The Rampage is 3-for-20 on the power play over its last five games, including two goals Sunday against Milwaukee.

San Antonio is 5-for-35 (14.3 percent) on the power play against Houston, but has given up three shorthanded goals. Lee Goren has two of the man-advantage goals versus the Aeros.

Power play update –

Houston enters tonight's game 51 of 400 on the power play (12.8 percent), 21st among 28 AHL teams.

The Aeros have gone 38-for-257 (14.8 percent) since Matt Foy snapped a streak of 37 straight unsuccessful power plays December 5, raising their percentage from a season-low 8.3 to 12.8.

The Aeros are 3-for-26 (11.5 percent) on the power play over their last five games.

Houston's 400 power plays are the most in the AHL, 10 more than second-place Manitoba and an eye-popping 151 more than San Antonio. The Aeros also led the league in 2002-03 with 514 chances.

The Aeros have only six wins in 36 games (6-22-7-1) when not scoring a power-play goal.

San Antonio is 21st in the AHL on the penalty kill at 83.7 percent.

The Rampage has killed off 11-of-14 (78.6 percent) shorthanded chances over the last five games.

Houston is 9-for-40 (22.5 percent) on the power play against the Rampage, including 4-for-16 (25.0 percent) the last four games. Rickard Wallin and Christoph Brandner each have two man advantage goals in the series.
