
San Diego Tries To Slow Down Red-Hot Idaho

SAN DIEGO â The San Diego Gulls try to snap a three-game losing streak and attempt to slow down the playoff bound and red-hot Idaho Steelheads when the two meet tonight at the ipayOne Center at the Sports Arena.
SERIES HISTORY: The Gulls and Steelheads have met seven times so far this season with Idaho holding a 4-3-0 series edge. Tonight is the last head-to-head match-up of the season. San Diego was 8-1-1 against Idaho last season, including a 5-0-0 mark at home.

San Diego owns the all-time series match-up, posting a 41-25-6 record against its West Division rival. The Gulls are 27-8-2 all-time against the Steelheads at the ipayOne Center at the Sports Arena.
LAST HEAD-TO-HEAD MEETING (APRIL 2 @ IDH): Tim Verbeek notched three points, while three others finished with multipoint games, as the Steelheads finished off a three-game series sweep of the Gulls with a 5-2 win. San Diego jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Max Birbraer and Darren Clark, but it was all Idaho from there. The Steelheads scored five unanswered goals in the contest, which was more than enough for goaltender Frank Doyle, who stopped 20 shots.
GULLS UPDATE: The Gulls (34-29-6) have been eliminated from the playoffs for the first time in their 10-year history... They will finish sixth in the West Division... San Diego has lost three straight â all to Idaho â and four of its last five games overall... The Gulls are 22-8-3 at home and finished 12-21-3 on the road... Their 22 home wins is tied for seventh most in the ECHL... San Diego has outscored its opponents 117-92 at home but was outscored 119-79 on the road... The Blue and Orange are 8-4-1 at home and 5-13-1 on the road since the all-star break (13-17-2 overall)...
OTHER NOTES: San Diego is 28-4-2 this season when scoring three-plus goals in a game, but just 6-25-4 when scoring two or less... The Gulls have only out-shot their opponents seven times since the all-star break (32 games)... They are just 19 for 158 on the power play (12 percent) since the all-star break... Max Birbraer (18g, 28) and Brett Draney (18g, 28a) lead the club with 46 points apiece...
IDAHO UPDATE: Idaho (41-21-7) begins the day third in the West Division with 89 points, three behind the second-place Long Beach Ice Dogs and three ahead of the fourth-place Bakersfield Condors... The Steelheads, last season's Kelly Cup Champions, have clinched a playoff berth... They are unbeaten in their last 17 games (13-0-4) and 24 of their last 25 games (20-1-4)... Idaho's last loss in regulation came against the Gulls on Feb. 27... Doyle (32-12-4) ranks first in the ECHL with 32 wins, fourth with a 2.13 goals-against average and tied for fifth with four shutouts... Warren Peters has seven points (4g, 3a) in seven games against San Diego this season... Verbeek has six points (5g, 1a) in four games against the Gulls...
TRANSACTIONS: Rookie defenseman Chester Ferreira was signed today... Brian Gornick was recalled to the American Hockey League's Syracuse Crunch on Monday... Curtis Brown was placed on team suspension Saturday... Yuri Moscevsky was signed Saturday... Andrew Canzanello was recalled to the AHL's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks on Friday...
