San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO -- After going winless for the second consecutive week, the Gulls slipped into fourth place in the Pacific Division for the first time since November. San Diego lost twice in Utah after winning the first three matches early in the season. Jesse Bennefield (2g, 1a) was the one bright spot during the two road games, as the Gulls record fell below .500.

WEEK IN REVIEW:

Feb. 8 @ Utah: The Utah Grizzlies scored three times in the first period and that proved to be enough, as they hung on to beat the Gulls 3-2 at the E-Center. Garret Cameron, who notched two of the three, got things started 4:32 into the game after taking a nice outlet pass from Ryan Kinasewich and beating Tom Lawson on a breakaway. Kinasewich then lit the lamp at the 8:06 mark, roofing a wrist shot over Lawson's out-stretched glove for his team-leading 23rd goal. Cameron made it a 3-0 Grizzlies lead at 16:58, finding himself wide-open in the slot before slipping home his 15th marker. Pierre-Luc Sleigher finally got the Gulls on the board 2:29 into the third period. After racing into the right wing corner, Sleigher centered a pass that caromed off Eddy's pads and into the net. San Diego cut the deficit back to one at the 7:37 mark when Rob Flynn scored off the rebound. That's where the Gulls' comeback would end, however, as Eddy and Grizzlies held on for the 3-2 victory.

Feb 10 @ Utah: The Gulls fell just short again, this time by a 4-3 score to the Grizzlies on Friday. The loss extended the Gulls' losing streak to a season-high four games, with each setback coming by a single goal on the road. The Grizzlies notched a pair of first-period tallies to take a multi-goal lead into the first intermission, 2-0. The Gulls clawed back on three separate occasions, pulling to within 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3. Each time, however, Utah responded with timely scores to hold off short-handed San Diego. All-Star Bennefield scored a pair of tallies for the Gulls, including one with 9:30 left in the third period to make it 4-3 and San Diego got its other goal from Mark Wires at the 2:55 mark of the third period. Steve Hildenbrand added a pair of assists for the Gulls, but it wasn't enough for San Diego, which played with only 14 skaters for the second game in a row.

Individual Notes: Lawson has dropped four of his last five decisions, but has stopped 163 of 176 shots in that span (.926 save percentage)... Bennefield broke a six-game pointless streak with three points Friday in Utah... Jonathon Shockey has eight points (1g, 7a) in his last 10 games. His career high for points in one season in 21, set in 2002-03 with Idaho...

Team Notes: The Gulls have killed 34 of 36 penalties during the last seven games and 107 of 119 (89.9 percent) in the last 19 games... They, however, are only 7-for-81 on the power play during the last 13 games (8.6 percent)... San Diego has scored 12 times in regulation during the last seven games (1-5-1)... All four losses on its losing streak have been by one goal...

San Diego's six-game road trip continues Tuesday in Las Vegas, with game-time set for 7:05 p.m. The Gulls finish the trek Wednesday in Bakersfield before returning home Saturday, Feb. 18, vs. the Victoria Salmon Kings. It will be "Canadian Night," and the first 8,000 fans will receive a Gulls toque (A.K.A. beanie hat), courtesy of your San Diego County Toyota Dealers.
