St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - After an inning and a half the St. Paul Saints found themselves down 8-0. With eight more opportunities at the plate the Saints knew they still had a chance. They utilized all of those opportunities to tie the game on three separate occasions before taking their first lead in the seventh inning and hung on to win 16-13 on Saturday afternoon at CHS Field in front of 4,632. With the win the Saints improved to 7-3 on the season.
The Indians got on the board in the first courtesy of a solo homer from Cal Mitchell, his third of the season, making it 1-0.
The Indians blew it wide open just an inning later when they scored seven in the seconds. Brendt Citta led off with a walk and Bligh Madris singled him to second. With two outs, Josh Bissonette singled home Citta putting the Indians up 2-0. A walk to Jared Oliva loaded the bases for Mitchell. He hit a fly ball to left that the wind pushed away from Jermaine Palacios and fell in for a bases clearing double putting the Indians up 5-0. Hunter Owen then doubled home Mitchell and Mason Martin clubbed a two-run homer making it 8-0.
The Saints answered back in the bottom of the inning with Curtis Terry leading off with a single to left. Derek Fisher then clubbed a two-run homer to left-center, his second of the season, cutting the deficit to 8-2. With one out, Jermaine Palacios singled, stole second, and scored on a two-out single by Jose Miranda getting the Saints to within 8-3.
The Saints tied the game for the first time in the third with a five spot and it all started with two outs and nobody on. Four consecutive walks forced in a run making it 8-4. Miranda then knocked home a pair to get the Saints within two, at 8-6. A passed ball scored Elliot Soto from third and that was followed by an RBI single from Daniel Robertson knotting the game at eight.
The Indians regained the lead in the fifth courtesy of an RBI single from Bligh Madris making it 9-8.
In the sixth, the Indians added two more runs when Oliva scored on a wild pitch and back-to-back doubles by Martin and Citta increasing the lead to 11-8.
The Saints tied it for the second time in the bottom of the inning when Royce Lewis tripled, Mark Contreras walked, and Terry blasted a three-run homer to center, his third of the season, making it 11-11. Terry went 2-5 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored.
For the third time in the game the Indians took the lead. In the seventh Connor Kaiser led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. An infield single by Bissonette gave the Indians a 12-11 lead.
The Saints took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the inning as Palacios led off the inning with a single. With one out, Miranda drove him home tying the game at 12. Miranda finished the game 3-5 with a double, four RBI, and two runs scored. With two outs Lewis doubled home Miranda putting the Saints up 13-12. Lewis went 3-5 with two doubles, a triple, an RBI, and two runs scored. Then things got interesting as the Saints took advantage of the new step off rule, where a pitcher is only allowed to step off, or throw over, twice, and if they aren't successful in picking off the runner on the third step off then the runner is awarded the next base. Lewis was granted third due to that rule. Within the same at bat, Lewis danced halfway off third, forcing the pitcher to step off and since he never threw over, Lewis was awarded home increasing the lead to 14-12.
The Indians got one back in the eighth, but the Saints put the game away in the bottom of the inning when Palacios hit a two-run homer to right, his first of the season. Palacios reached base safely all five timed and went 4-4 with a home run, two RBI, four runs scored, and a stolen base.
The same two teams meet in the finale of the five-game series on Sunday afternoon at 2:07 p.m. The Saints send RHP Jake Faria (0-0, 10.80) to the mound against Indians RHP Beau Sulser (1-1, 3.12). The game can be seen on 45TV and MiLB.TV and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
