Saints Squander Five-Run Lead, Lose for Fourth Straight Game, 9-8 in 11

TOLEDO, OH - The St. Paul Saints had a five-run lead heading into the bottom of the sixth and a two-run lead with one out in the ninth. They couldn't hang on and lost 9-8 in 11 innings to the Toledo Mud Hens at Fifth Third Field on Thursday night for their season high fourth straight loss. The loss drops the Saints to 53-46 and are now 3.5 games out of first.

With the Saints up 6-4 in the bottom of the ninth, Kody Clemens led off by reaching on a fielding error by the second baseman JT Riddle. With one out the man tied for the league lead in homers, Aderlin Rodriguez, crushed a two-run tying home to left, making it 6-6.

In the 10th, with Jimmy Kerrigan the placed runner at second, a fly out to deep center by Sherman Johnson moved Kerrigan to third. Drew Maggi's RBI single gave the Saints a 7-6 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Brady Policelli sacrificed the placed runner, Ryan Kreidler, to third. A sacrifice fly from Riley Greene knotted the game at seven.

The Saints scored their placed runner in the 11th, Damek Tomscha, on two wild pitches giving them an 8-7 lead.

In the bottom of the 11th, however, a foul out by Spencer Torkelson moved the placed runner Jacob Robson to third. A wild pitch scored Robson tying the game at eight. Clemens then doubled to right-center and two batters later Rodriguez won the game with an RBI single to left for the walk-off single.

Randy Dobnak got the rehab start for the Saints and got through the first two innings unscathed. For the third consecutive game, however, the Mud Hens got on the board first. Greene led off the inning with a single to right and Niko Goodrum, on Major League rehab, walked. Dobnak got a double play that moved Greene to third, but on the first pitch to Clemens he lined an RBI single to center giving the Mud Hens a 1-0 lead.

The Saints finally scored in the series without the aid of the long ball. With one out in the fourth Mark Contreras doubled to left and Gilberto Celestino drove him home with a double to the right-center field gap tying the game at one. After Celestino moved to third on a fly out, Johnson gave the Saints a 2-1 lead with a single to right-center. Maggi increased the lead to 3-1 with an RBI triple to right-center.

The Saints added to their lead in the fifth as Jose Miranda led off with a single to right and Trevor Larnach walked. With two outs Celestino drew a walk to load the bases. Starting pitcher Logan Shore left the game for reliever Nolan Blackwood and Jimmy Kerrigan bounced a single up the middle that scored a pair of runs putting the Saints up 5-1.

In the sixth, Riddle led off with a double down the left field line and scored on a line drive single into right by Larnach putting the Saints up 6-1.

The Mud Hens mounted a comeback in the bottom of the inning against reliever Ian Hamilton. Isaac Paredes and Rodriguez led off with walks. A single by Christin Stewart loaded the bases. Hamilton then unleashed a wild pitch that scored a run making it 6-2. With one out, Policelli doubled down the first base line plating a pair to cut the Saints lead to 6-4.

The same two teams meet in game four of the six-game series on Friday night at 6:05 p.m. central at Fifth Third Field. The Saints send LHP Bryan Sammons (0-1, 5.32) to the mound against Mud Hens RHP Pedro Payano (2-5, 5.12). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
