St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - On a bizarre night in which the St. Paul Saints had a three-run home run overturned, the Toledo Mud Hens scored six unanswered runs from the fourth inning through eighth. The Saints offense was held relatively quiet in a 7-3 loss at CHS Field in front of 9.364.

The Saints struck first in the first, but not without some drama. With one out Anthony Prato reached on an infield single to second and he went to third on a single from Trevor Larnach. That's when the commotion ensued. Kyle Garlick hit what was ruled a three-run home run down the left field line. After the Mud Hens argued, the umpires got together and overturned the call. Saints' manager Toby Gardenhire then argued and was tossed. Garlick wound up striking out, but the Saints would get a little justice. The next hitter, Gilberto Celestino, hit a sinking liner to right that dropped in for a hit and then skipped by right fielder Justyn-Henry Malloy for an error as two runs scored giving the Saints a 2-0 lead.

The Mud Hens answered with a run in the second inning as Tyler Nevin singled, moved to second on a walk, and scored when Donny Sands hit a grounder to short and the Saints were able to get the out at second, but the throw to first by Austin Martin went over the head of Garlick cutting the Saints lead to 2-1.

In the third, the Saints made it 3-1 when Prato walked, moved to third on a Larnach single off the wall in right, and scored on Garlick's sacrifice fly.

The Mud Hens knotted the game at three in the fourth when Nevin singled and Joe Rizzo hit a two-out, two-run homer to right, his seventh of the season.

Nevin gave the Mud Hens a 4-3 lead when he led off the sixth inning with a solo homer to left center, his eighth of the season.

The Mud Hens put the game away with a three-run eighth inning. With one out Nevin reached on an infield single to second. A wild pitch moved him to second and he advanced to third on a single to left by Winceel Pérez. Donny Sands made it 5-3 with an RBI single to left. An RBI double to right-center by Rizzo increased the lead to 6-3. Johan Camargo finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly putting the Mud Hens up 7-3.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the six-game series on Sunday afternoon at CHS Field at 2:07 p.m. The Saints send RHP Louie Varland (4-0, 5.44) to the mound against Mud Hens LHP Bryan Sammons (0-2, 6.00). The game can be seen on the CW Network, the Bally Live app (free), and MiLB.TV (subscription), and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
