St. Paul Saints News Release
COLUMBUS, OH - All good things must come to an end. For the St. Paul Saints two streaks ended on Wednesday night at Huntington Park. Their eight game win streak was snapped at the hands of the Columbus Clippers, 4-3, and for the first time in 18 games they failed to hit a home run.
For the fourth consecutive game the Saints scored in their first at bat. Spencer Steer led off the game by reaching on a two base throwing error from the shortstop Tyler Freeman. Alex Kirilloff was hit by a pitch. Kyle Garlick grounded into a double play that erased Steer at third and Garlick at first as Kirilloff took second. Tim Beckham extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI single to left putting the Saints up 1-0. That was all the Saints would get against Major League rehabber, Aaron Civale who went 4.2 innings allowing one unearned run on two hits while walking one and striking out seven.
The Clippers grabbed the lead in the second as Nolan Jones led off the inning with a single to left. David Fry drilled a double to left putting runners at second and third. Mike Rivera tied the game at one with an RBI groundout. With two outs Will Benson doubled down the first base line scoring Fry to put the Clippers up 2-1. Tyler Freeman made it 3-1 with an RBI single to right.
The Clippers added a big insurance run in the seventh as Fry led off with a single to right. Rivera singled to left putting runners at second and third. With two outs, Freeman singled to left scoring Fry increasing the lead to 4-1.
The Saints cut the deficit to one all with two outs in the eighth. Tim Beckham and Jake Cave both drew walks. Back-to-back RBI singles from Mark Contreras and Michael Helman got the Saints to within 3-2. John Andreoli followed with a walk to load the bases. Former Saints pitcher Ian Gibaut came out of the bullpen to face José Godoy. He hit a tailing line drive to left-center, but it hung up and curled back towards the left fielder Benson who made the grab to end the inning.
Major League rehabber Kyle Garlick went 0-5 and grounded into two double plays.
The same two teams meet in game three of a six-game series on Thursday afternoon at 11:05 p.m. (CT). The Saints start Major League rehabber RHP Josh Winder (0-0, 18.00) against Clippers RHP Peyton Battenfield (3-4, 3.24). The game can be seen on MiLB.TV and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
