Bello Strikes out Eight, WooSox Fall to Toledo

Worcester Red Sox News Release
WORCESTER, M.A. - The Worcester Red Sox (31-31) took an early lead, but a late Toledo Mud Hens (31-29) surge gave the road team a 5-2 win on Wednesday night at Polar Park.
Brayan Bello got the start for the WooSox, and despite suffering his second loss, dominated the strike zone once again, striking out eight over five-plus innings of work. In 33.1 Triple-A innings, the right-hander has 44 Ks, a mark that leads the International League in Ks since his promotion in mid-May.
Bello closed his sixth Worcester start with the following line: 5+ IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 8 K.
Toledo grabbed runs in two separate frames against him, the first on an opposite field homer for Josh Lester on the first pitch he saw in the second inning. In the sixth, Riley Greene, MLB.com's number two prospect, delivered a leadoff double. Two batters later, Jeimer Candelario grounded a double down the left field line, scoring Greene. That chased Bello from the game, and a Josh Lester sac-fly off Michael Feliz would make it a 3-2 lead for the Mud Hens.
Offensively, the WooSox made it a 1-1 game on a sac-fly by Jeter Downs in the second, a run set up by a Christin Stewart leadoff double. They took the lead an inning later on a wild pitch that allowed Johan Mieses to sprint home. That put Worcester on top 2-1, a lead that held until Toledo's sixth inning rally.
The Mud Hens added one more in the seventh on a single from Greene-the ball was misplayed in right by Mieses, and the error allowed a run to score from first.
That extended the Toledo lead to 4-2, and they would add one more on a ninth-inning sac-fly by John Valente. Worcester, meanwhile, did not score over their final six offensive innings in the loss.
The WooSox continue the series Thursday at 6:45 p.m. against the Toledo Mud Hens, affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. On the mound, Thomas Pannone (4-2, 4.39) faces Elvin Rodriguez (2-1, 3.57). Radio coverage is live at 6:25 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network, while television coverage is on NESN.
