St. Paul Saints News Release
TOLEDO, OH - Raise a glass to the St. Paul Saints pitchers on Tuesday night. They did not give up a run in the 8.1 innings pitched of the July 17 resumed game and then came back in the regularly scheduled game and blanked the Toledo Mud Hens in a seven-inning contest, winning 1-0 at Fifth Third Field.
Mario Sanchez got the start for the Saints and gave up a one out single in the first to Major League rehabber, Jonathan Schoop. Daz Cameron bounced into a fielder's choice and then stole second. Sanchez got Brendon Davis on strikes to end the inning. Sanchez retired the final 11 men he faced going 4.0 shutout innings allowing one hit and striking out three.
Drew Strotman came out for the fifth and retired the side in order on just 10 pitches.
The Saints got the lone run of game in the sixth when Mark Contreras drew a one out walk. An error on a pickoff attempt at first moved Contreras to second and Cole Sturgeon's single to left scored Contreras giving the Saints a 1-0 lead.
Jharel Cotton worked the sixth and retired the first two hitters he faced, stretching the Saints streak to a season tying high 16 in a row. The next hitter, however, Zack Short, doubled to the gap in right-center. Cotton walked Schoop, but got Cameron looking on strike three.
Cotton came back out for the seventh and gave up a one out double to Andre Lipcius, but John Valente popped out and Michael De La Cruz struck out to end the game. Cotton worked 2.0 shutout innings allowing two hits while walking one and striking out four as he picked up his first save of the season.
The same two teams meet in game two of the six-game series on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field at 5:35 p.m. (CT). The Saints send RHP Ronny Henriquez (2-4, 5.94) to the mound against Mud Hens RHP Austin Bergner (1-2, 5.25). The game can be seen on MiLB.TV and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
