Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC - The American Hockey League announced today that forward Derek Ryan and defenseman Trevor Carrick will represent the Charlotte Checkers at the 2016 Toyota AHL All-Star Classic in Syracuse, NY.

This marks the first career selection for both players, who will help represent the Western Conference at a skills competition on Jan. 31 and the Central Division in a round-robin tournament on Feb. 1. Additional details regarding the event's new format and full playing rosters from the AHL are attached to this release.

Ryan, 29, currently leads the Checkers and is tied for sixth in the AHL with 30 points in 32 games. The Checkers captain and reigning Swedish Hockey League most valuable player also leads Charlotte in goals (12), assists (18) and game-winning goals (three) and is tied for the team lead in power-play goals (four) and plus/minus (plus-5). In the Checkers' six AHL seasons, he is one of only two players who have entered the New Year among the league's top 10 scorers along with Jerome Samson in 2010-11. A native of Spokane, WA, Ryan signed with the Carolina Hurricanes as a free agent last summer.

Carrick, 21, ranks second on the Checkers and eighth among all AHL defensemen with 21 points in 29 games. His seven goals, which equal his 76-game total as a rookie in 2014-15, are tied for fourth among league blueliners. Carrick, who recently won the Spengler Cup with Team Canada in Davos, Switzerland, ranks second on the Checkers in points, goals and assists (14). The Hurricanes drafted Carrick, who hails from Stouffville, Ontario, in the fourth round (115th overall) in 2012.

After wrapping up a six-game California road trip in San Diego this Friday and Saturday, the Checkers return home to begin a six-game home stand against Grand Rapids on Tuesday, Jan. 12.
