January 7, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release

Springfield, MA - The Portland Pirates, in conjunction with the American Hockey League, announced Thursday that Pirates forward Rob Schremp has been named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team for the 2016 Toyota AHL All-Star Classic, to be held January 31 and February 1 in Syracuse, N.Y.

Schremp, a five-foot-11, 200-pound left wing from Fulton, New York, has played in 32 games so far this season for the Pirates tallying 13 goals and 14 assist. It was Schremp's buzzer beater that lifted the Pirates to a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory against the Providence Bruins in December.

Drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round of the 2004 NHL Entry Level Draft, 25th overall, Schremp made his NHL debut in 2007 appearing in two games for the Oilers.

After being claimed off waivers by the New York Islanders, the 29-year-old scored his first NHL goal against the Boston Bruins in 2009. He finished the season scoring 7 goals and 22 points over 44 games as well as 10 goals and 22 points in 45 games with the Islanders in 2010-11.

Schremp will represent the Portland Pirates in the 2016 Toyota AHL All-Star Skills Competition on Jan. 31. The event will keep its traditional format, with All-Stars from the Eastern Conference squaring off against All-Stars from the Western Conference in seven skills events.

The 2016 Toyota AHL All-Star Challenge will take place on the evening of Feb. 1. Instead of a traditional 60-minute game, the AHL's All-Stars will be divided into four teams, one representing each of the league's divisions (Atlantic, North, Central, Pacific). The teams will then play a round-robin tournament featuring six games of nine minutes each; the first half of each game will be played at 4-on-4, and the second half at 3-on-3. The two teams with the best records at the end of the round-robin tournament will face off for the championship, a six-minute game played at 3-on-3.

The 2016 Toyota AHL All-Star Classic in Syracuse will feature the top young talent in the American Hockey League: Of the 679 players to take part in the AHL All-Star Classic since 1995, more than 93 percent have competed in the National Hockey League.

After the All-Star Break, the Pirates return to action at the Cross Insurance Arena on Friday, February 5, against the Hartford Wolf Pack. Game time is 7:00 pm. Friday night is Hockey Night in Portland. College students take $4 off your ticket at the Trusted Choice Box Office when your show your student ID with the Sun Tan City College Discount.
