Rubio, Abubakar & Namli Named to MLS Team of the Week Presented by Audi
September 14, 2020 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Colorado Rapids News Release
The impressive weekend for the Colorado Rapids continues.
On Monday, MLS announced that three players from the Rapids have been named to the Team of the Week, presented by Audi, for week 11: Diego Rubio, Lalas Abubakar and Younes Namli.
Rubio solidified his spot in the week's best lineup in the very beginning of Saturday's matchup against Real Salt Lake. He scored two goals within the first 10 minutes, which was just the start of the team's momentum. His first goal is credited as the game-winner, as the team went on to win 5-0.
On Saturday, Abubakar anchored the defense that earned its first shutout in 2020. The unit held Real Salt Lake to only one shot on target on its way to the club's first-ever win in Rio Tinto Stadium. In addition, in Wednesday night's 1-1 tie against Houston, Abubakar scored his first goal for the club in stoppage time to earn the tie.
Namli added two assists on Saturday evening, the first one setting up Rubio to make the score 2-0, and the second to defender and Homegrown Sam Vines, who netted his first MLS goal. Namli's ability to make players miss with his dribbling in addition to finding the scoresheet is quickly making him one of the most exciting players to watch in MLS.
Week 11 consisted of the 18 matches played between Sept. 9-13.
Team of the Week (3-4-3, right to left): Ryan Meara (RBNY) - Anton Tinnerholm (NYC), Lalas Abubakar (COL), Mark McKenzie (PHI) - Joevin Jones (SEA), Anthony Fontana (PHI), Dax McCarty (NSH), Jordan Morris (SEA) - Diego Rubio (COL), Gyasi Zardes (CLB), Raul Ruidiaz (SEA)
Coach: Gary Smith (NSH)
Bench: Kyle Zobeck (DAL) - Aaron Long (RBNY), Mark-Anthony Kaye (LAFC), Lewis Morgan (MIA), Kevin Molino (MIN), Younes Namli (COL), Romell Quioto (MTL)
The Team of the Week presented by Audi is voted on by the MLSsoccer.com editorial staff.
