Moose Jaw, SK- The Victoria Royals' special teams combined for three goals to defeat the Moose Jaw Warriors 5-2 in a fast paced game on Wednesday night.
In a contest that highlighted the speed of both teams, the Royals' special teams generated three goals including Alex Forsberg's game winner on the powerplay in the second period. Victoria's other special team markers were scored by Tyler Soy shorthanded in the opening stanza and Matthew Phillips with a powerplay marker in the final frame to round out the scoring. Royals' Dante Hannoun tallied the other two markers.
The Warriors' goal scorers were Dryden Hunt and Noah Gregor.
In the win, Victoria's fourth in a row, four players have continued their scoring streaks. Hannoun's two tallies tonight bumps him up to eight points (6g-2a) in his last six games. Joe Hicketts, with two assists, has also racked up eight points (1g-7a) in his past four contests. Forsberg tallied a goal and two helpers for his second consecutive three point night. Phillips has now notched two goals and two assists in his past three games.
Royals' netminder Coleman Vollrath stopped 17 of the 19 shots fired his way. Warriors' goaltender Zach Sawchenko turned away 26 of the 31 shots he faced.
Victoria went 2/5=40.0% on the man-advantage, while Moose Jaw went 1/3=33.3%.
The Royals, first in the Western Conference, will travel to Brandon, MB on Friday night to take on the Wheat Kings who are ranked fifth in the Canadian Hockey League. Puck drop is set for 5:30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
Victoria returns home for a pair of games against the U.S Division leading Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday, November 13th and Saturday, November 14th for Turn Back the Clock Night. Saturday's game will feature Victoria WHL alumni goaltender Grant Fuhr and former Royals' captain Tyler Stahl. Both contests are slated for 7:05 p.m.
