Oil Kings Hold on for Win over Seattle

Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

EDMONTON, ALTA. - It may not have been the prettiest win, but the Edmonton Oil Kings found a way to pull it off Wednesday night.

Edmonton (5-9-3) never trailed as they got two goals from captain Brandon Baddock in a 4-2 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds (9-5-1-0), the ninth ranked team in the CHL Top Ten, at Rexall Place.

While the Oil Kings bent at times, head coach Steve Hamilton admitted, they never broke, holding a 3-2 lead from the 7:52 mark of the second period until Baddock put them up 4-2 into the empty net with 2:10 to play.

"To be honest, I thought we were ragged tonight. I said to the guys after we were rough around the edges tonight," Hamilton said. "But what I did like, I really commended the guys in the third period for doing what needed to be done to get the win. As much as at times it was a little scattered, we stood in and made some tough plays and a lot of little things that we would expect of our group."

It was Edmonton's first regulation win on home ice this season as the team closed the door defensively and Patrick Dea made 28 saves to pick up the win.

"You could just see the guys bearing down more. We really wanted this win. We've been so close lately but kept coming up short, so it was good to get," said Oil Kings defenceman Dysin Mayo.

"We've been close the past couple games at home. We kept just pushing, and we found a way to score a few more goals."

The win is Edmonton's second in three games, with a tight loss to Spokane sandwiched in the middle, a game Edmonton controlled much of the play in but struggled to score. On the heels of an eight-game losing streak, those games have felt like a turnaround for a club that was sinking down the standings a week ago.

"The last three games, it's kind of seemed like we're turning the corner from a bit of a slow start to the season," Baddock said. "Obviously we're doing the things that coach has been harping on and getting simple offence around the net and simple rebounds."

Brett Pollock and Tyler Robertson also scored for Edmonton, while Pollock picked up an assist for a two-point game. Mayo picked up his 100th career point with an assist on Baddock's first goal.

Alexander True and Ryan Gropp scored for Seattle. True and Mathew Barzal both had two-point games for the Thunderbirds. Logan Flodell made 22 saves in a losing effort.

The Oil Kings will head to Calgary for their first match-up of the season with the Calgary Hitmen Friday. The Battle of Alberta will shift back to Rexall Place Saturday night at 7 p.m.
