New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- Ricky Romero pitched one-run baseball over eight dominant innings, and David Smith extended his season-high hitting streak to nine games with a first-inning triple, but the Trenton Thunder scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning to pull out a 3-1 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats before a Wednesday night standing-room-only crowd of 6,860 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
Colin Curtis (2-for-3, 2 RBI, BB) delivered a two-out single in the top of the first inning, scoring Ramiro Pena (1-for-4, R) to give Trenton (64-38) a 1-0 lead against Romero.
New Hampshire (41-62) tied the game, 1-1, when Smith (1-for-3, 3B, R, BB) tripled off Chase Wright and scored on an Eric Nielsen (0-for-4, RBI) ground out in the bottom of the second inning.
Wright allowed just that one run on five hits over seven innings. The southpaw struck out one and walked three.
Romero, making his franchise record-tying 50th career Fisher Cats' start, was masterful in eight innings, allowing one run on five hits. The left-hander walked two and registered three strike outs. Romero did not allow a Trenton runner to reach second base over his last seven innings of work, recording 19 of his 24 outs via ground balls.
Trenton took the lead for good with four consecutive hits in the top of the ninth inning off losing pitcher Zach Dials (2-3). Austin Jackson (1-for-4, 2B, R) led off with a double and scored on a triple by Chris Malec (1-for-3, BB, 3B, R, RBI). Curtis singled through the drawn-in infield to plate Malec, providing the final run.
Dials had a stretch of 12 consecutive appearances without allowing a run snapped by allowing two runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Mark Melancon (6-0) earned the win with two hitless innings of relief. The right-hander walked one.
The Fisher Cats and the Thunder wrap up their four-game series at 12:05pm Thursday afternoon at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. New Hampshire's Brandon Magee (3-11, 5.11) pitches against Trenton's Eric Hacker (5-1, 2.70) in a battle of right-handers. Radio coverage begins at 11:45am on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman and Mike Murphy.
