Rockets Announce Top Pick in 2007 WHL Bantam Draft
May 3, 2007 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Kelowna Rockets News Release
Kelowna, BC: With the second overall pick in the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft, the Kelowna Rockets have selected forward Luke Moffatt, of Scottsdale, Arizona.
Moffatt was widely considered to be the top offensive prospect available in the draft. At 5'11, 170 pounds he's a dynamic offensive forward and a close friend and former team mate of defenseman, Kyle Verdino, of Glendale, Arizona who was chosen by the Rockets in the 2006 Bantam Draft.
Kelowna quickly moved to select him after the Moose Jaw Warriors acquired the first pick in the draft from Portland and chose forward Quinton Howden of Winnipeg.
"We're really excited to have a chance to draft a player like Luke," said Rockets' President and General Manager, Bruce Hamilton, from the draft in Calgary. "He's got lots of skill and we thought for sure that he'd be the first player chosen."
"I talked to him this morning and he's thrilled that we've drafted him," continued Hamilton. "This is the first time in a long time that our club has had a chance to draft a top end offensive talent and we couldn't be happier as well."
When reached at a U.S. regional hockey development camp in Utah where his son was going through an on ice session, Luke's Dad, Kenny, expressed his thoughts on the day's events.
"I'm speaking on behalf of Luke and one thing that stood out in all our discussions with prospective teams is that no one said a bad thing about Bruce Hamilton or the Rockets' organization. And, that includes comments from competing teams," said Kenny, a Coquitlam native and former BCHL player who was Luke's Coach with the Phoenix Firebirds this past season.
"So, how could we not be thrilled to be coming to Kelowna?"
Luke's younger sister, Cassie (12) is a horseback rider and competitive jumper back home in Scottsdale. She, along with Mom, Kolby, is equally excited for Luke and his future in the WHL.
