Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
North Charleston, SC - The Greenville Road Warriors (28-21-3), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, received goals from Scott Arnold and Michael St. Croix on Sunday, but Lee Moffie netted the game-winner with just 7:31 left in a 3-2 setback to the South Carolina Stingrays at the North Charleston Coliseum.
The loss kept Greenville in a tie for fourth place in the East Division with Elmira (59 points) and dropped the club to 4-8-1 against the Stingrays this season. South Carolina is now four points ahead in the East Division standings.
Following a scoreless first period that saw Greenville outshoot South Carolina 11-4, the Stingrays took a 1-0 advantage at 13:52 of the middle frame on a questionable power-play goal from Derek DeBlois. With Devon Krogh in the box for a helmet violation, Rob Ricci controlled the puck below the goal line and centered a pass for DeBlois that deflected off a body and lifted high into the air. DeBlois swung with a baseball-type hack from the doorstep and batted the puck past netminder Braely Torris for his 13th goal of the season. No high-sticking call was made.
The Road Warriors responded less than five minutes later when Arnold earned his fifth goal of the season to even the game at 1-1. Vinny Saponari began the attack when he found Krogh at the blue line, who quickly slipped the puck to Arnold on the right wing. From there, Arnold ripped a line drive past goaltender Jeff Jakaitis at the 18:15 mark.
St. Croix put Greenville on top just 1:17 into the third period when he capitalized on a second-chance created by Mike Banwell's slap shot from the left point. Jakaitis knocked down the initial attempt, but the rebound fell directly to St. Croix at the low slot, who finished for his seventh goal of the season.
South Carolina answered at 5:30 of the final frame courtesy of Andrew Rowe's first goal and fifth point of the weekend. DeBlois built pressure in the Road Warriors' zone when he skated from the slot to the right circle and centered a pass to the doorstep, where Rowe knocked it home on a one-time redirection.
Moffie scored the game-winning goal at the 12:29 mark with a sniper from the left circle that found the top corner of the net past Torris' glove.
The game was also physical from start to finish and included one fight at 12:28 of the second period between Emerson Clark and Tim Spencer.
Greenville finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill. Torris (2-1-0) made 21 saves in the loss, while Jakaitis (13-7-2) stopped 28 shots in the victory.
The Road Warriors outshot South Carolina 30-24.
