Tough Times in Toledo
The Wheeling Nailers will be happy to know that they will not have any more regular season games at Huntington Center during the 2014-15 campaign, after losing all three of their visits their against the Toledo Walleye. Saturday night's defeat was perhaps the most difficult to swallow, as the Walleye exploded out of the gates with three goals in the first period, before tacking on two more in the third for a 5-0 victory. Neil Conway was perfect between the pipes for Toledo, denying all 32 shots he faced, sending Wheeling to its fourth shutout loss of the season. Making matters worse, defenseman Tristin Llewellyn left the game in the first period, after receving a hard hit, which forced him to spend the night at Toledo Hospital.
IceMen Freeze Winning Streak
The Kalamazoo Wings suffered their first loss in four games on Saturday night, as they dropped a 7-3 decision to the Evansville IceMen at Wings Stadium. The setback came one night after Kalamazoo put an end to the Reading Royals' 14-game point streak with a 4-1 triumph on Friday. Kalamazoo jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the Saturday game, only to see the IceMen rally back with five consecutive goals to take a 6-2 advantage. Michael Neal, Dane Fox, and Ludwig Blomstrand were the goal scorers for the Wings, who were unable to produce enough support for Joel Martin, who surrendered six goals on the 34 shots he faced. The home loss was only Kalamazoo's second of the 2015 calendar year, following a 4-1 Wheeling win on January 30th.
Hey Big Brother
For the first time since the 2011-12 season, the Nailers will take the ice with a pair of brothers donning the Wheeling uniform, as defenseman Tanner Burton has joined his younger brother Jarrett on the current squad. Jarrett Burton has been one of the Nailers' bright young stars, having recorded seven goals and 18 points in 32 games. Prior to being signed by Wheeling, Tanner spent parts of the 2014-15 campaign with the SPHL's Louisiana IceGators, as well as the ECHL's Brampton Beast, tallying seven goals and 26 points in 44 games. Tanner is older than Jarrett by two years and 29 days, and this will be the first time they play on the same team since junior hockey. Paul and Tim Crowder were the last pair of brothers to suit up with the Nailers, as they played their final game together on November 5, 2011 in a 5-1 victory at Trenton. Both brothers acquired one point in that tilt.
They Should Name the Crease After Him
Back in the 2012-13 season, Kalamazoo goaltender Joel Martin achieved something that most modern day ECHL fans would consider to be nearly unthinkable, as he was between the pipes in 39 straight games for the Wings. While that number is still a long ways away this season, Martin enters Sunday's showdown having backstopped each of the last 12 Kalamazoo contests, compiling a 5-5-2 record during that time. During his last four starts, the 32-year old netminder has faced at least 30 shots, as he defeated Florida, Gwinnett, and Reading, before falling to Evansville on Saturday. Martin is currently "sharing" the crease with Garrett Bartus, who defeated the Nailers on January 24th as a member of the Fort Wayne Komets.
Time to Break a Couple of Ties
Sunday afternoon marks the third of five head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Wings this season, as well as the third of four battles between the two clubs at Wings Stadium. After going nearly a full year without facing off, the two sides split a two-game weekend series in Kalamazoo at the end of January. Wheeling came out on top 4-1 on the Friday night, as Morgan Ellis scored a pair of goals, while Franky Palazzese made 32 saves. One night later, the Wings collected their victory, as Justin Taylor's third period power play goal snapped a 3-3 tie, giving his squad the upper hand in a 4-3 final score. The Nailers and Wings have both won seven games in Southwest Michigan during the all-time series. Following Sunday, both teams will have one home game remaining against the other in 2014-15.
The Nailers will play three games during the weekend of February 27th-March 1st .
Elmira returns to town on Friday, February 27th at 7:35 as the Nailers host their annual Wing Fest game. That night will also be a Flat Screen Friday, Frosty Friday, Player Poster Giveaway, and Wheeling Island Nailer Night.
Saturday, February 28th is Pink in the Rink, when Wheeling battles Greenville at 7:35 . The Nailers will wear special jerseys, there will be pink rally towels handed out, and autographed mystery pucks will be available for purchase.
Sunday, March 1st wraps up the weekend at 4:05 against the Road Warriors on a Family Funday with $5 kids tickets, Oglebay Good Zoo Day, and a post game skate with the team. That day will also be the annual Pucks & Paws Day, when fans are invited to bring their dogs and cats to the game.
