Beast Comeback Comes up Short
February 22, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Brampton Beast News Release
BRAMPTON, ON- The Brampton Beast hit the ice with something to prove in their 50th game of the season, sitting just one quality winning streak out of a playoff position with games in hand against divisional opponents. The push against the Mallards wasn't enough however, as Quad City came away with their seventh win of the season against the Beast, earning with victory by a score of 6-3 on Cal Wild jersey giveaway day at the Powerade Centre.
The Beast once again donned their Canada-themed alternate jerseys, giving the fans a trip down memory lane to the 1987 Canada Cup series, only this time the outcome wasn't as memorable.
Grant Rollheiser made 11 saves before being pulled, while Jason Pitton, Stephon Thorne and Chad Painchaud added goals to pace the Beast in a hard-fought game. Cal Wild also added an assist to give the fans wearing his jersey something to cheer about.
The first period was a treat for the fans at the Powerade Centre. The stanza saw a see-saw battle, with four goals and 19 shots being exchanged between the two teams. Under four minutes into the frame, Mathew Maione kept the puck in at the Mallards blue line and danced around two defenders. With his head up, he found Mike MacIsaac at the hash marks, who one-touched passed the puck in front to Stephon Thorne. Thorne made no mistake, beating Evan Mosher low glove for his seventh goal of the season. Quad City's Todd Fiddler replied at the 11:24 mark of the period after a weird sequence that saw the Beast hit the cross bar and the Mallards take it down the ice and score seconds later. Forty-one seconds after that, the Beast once again took the lead when Bobby Hughes dropped the puck to Jason Pitton, who potted his 18th of the year. Towards the end of the frame, Quad City once again replied, with Pearce Eviston notching his ninth of the year, sending the teams into the dressing room tied at two.
The second period was the exact opposite of what the Beast wanted. Just 2:36 into the frame, the Eviston put Quad City up by one, batting in a rebound for his ninth of the year. Five minutes later, the visitors struck again, this time on a power play marker by Nicholas Rioux, his third of the season. Less than two minutes after that, Quad City struck once again, with Kevin Baker adding his 10th goal of the season on a shot that spelled the end of Grant Rollheiser's game. At the 17:54 mark in the period, Quad City found their fourth of the frame, with Anthony Collins beating Trevor Cann on a scramble in front of the net to put the Mallards up 6-2 heading into the third.
Chad Painchaud added a beautiful power play goal in the third period to finish off a tic-tac-toe passing play in front of Mosher, but that was as close as the Beast would come as the game ended in a 6-3 final.
The Beast finish up their home stand and series against the Mallards tomorrow, Monday February 23, on School Day at the Powerade Centre. The game marks the first sell out in Brampton Beast history and the first School Day every hosted by the Beast. After the game, the team travels to Wichita and Allen for a single game before returning home on March 6 to open a three-game series against the Wichita Thunder on Star Wars night.
