Friday, November 25, Chicago @ RIVERMEN: As they did last Friday, the Peoria Rivermen will welcome the Chicago Wolves to Carver Arena this Friday. The Wolves prevailed in last week's match-up, beating the Rivermen 4-3 in a shootout. Entering this week's games, Chicago stands in fifth position in the West Division of the Western Conference with a 5-6-1-2 record and 13 points. Left wing Ramzi Abid now sits atop the Wolves' scoring chart with 15 points (7 goals, 8 assists) in 14 games played. On Monday, the Wolves' National Hockey League (NHL) parent club Atlanta Thrashers reassigned goaltender Adam Berkhoel to Chicago. In three games so far this season with the Wolves, Berkhoel is 1-2-0 with a 3.02 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage. Chicago currently ranks 18th in the American Hockey League (AHL) on the power play with a 13.8 percent conversion rate. On the penalty kill, the Wolves operate a bit more efficiently, standing 13th in the League thanks to a penalty-killing percentage of 83.5.
Saturday, November 26, Iowa @ RIVERMEN: The Rivermen will conclude their slate of games for Thanksgiving weekend by hosting the Iowa Stars on Saturday. The last time these two teams matched up, back on Sunday, November 13, the game was suspended after two periods due to an unsafe ice surface at Wells Fargo Arena. That game will be resumed on Saturday, December 3. The primary affiliate of the NHL Dallas Stars, the Iowa club now holds down the sixth position in the West Division. The Iowa Stars' 6-9-0-0 record and 12 points place them nine points behind the second-place Rivermen. Defenseman Patrick Traverse currently leads Iowa in scoring with 12 points (1 goal, 11 assists) in 15 games played. Mike Smith has logged the most time in the Stars' goal thus far in 2005-06, owning a record of 4-5-0, a 2.91 goals-against average, a .901 save percentage, and one shutout in nine appearances. The Stars power-play unit is now tied for 20th position in the League at 13.5 percent, and the team is tied for 19th in the AHL in penalty killing with a percentage of 80.2.
RIVERMEN ACTION LAST WEEK
Friday, November 18, Chicago 4 @ RIVERMEN 3 (SO): The AHL Peoria Rivermen lost their first shootout game in franchise history, falling to the Chicago Wolves by a count of 4-3. Chicago led off the game's scoring at 6:10 of the first period with a goal by right wing Justin Morrison, but Peoria center Blake Evans responded with a tally just 14 seconds later. Winger Scott Barney put the Wolves ahead 2-1 about midway through the first with a power-play marker. Rivermen right wing Mike Glumac, however, scored three seconds before the period was to end to give his team another tie at 2-2. Peoria left wing Peter Sejna scored the lone goal of the second period on the power play at 9:05. After Chicago winger Ramzi Abid tallied the only marker of the third period at 1:10, the game ended tied at 3-3 and went to overtime. Neither team scored in the overtime session, so a shootout determined the winner of the game. That turned out to be the Wolves on the strength of two shootout goals by Kevin Doell and Travis Roche. Only Mike Glumac scored a shootout goal for Peoria. Goaltender Reinhard Divis stopped 29 of 32 shots in his first start with the Rivermen. Chicago out-shot Peoria by a count of 33-30. The Wolves went two for 10 on the power play, while the Rivermen were one for seven with the man-advantage.
Saturday, November 19, RIVERMEN 4 vs. San Antonio 3: This game turned out to be a special-teams battle, as six of the seven goals scored in the tilt came on either the power play or the penalty kill. The San Antonio Rampage tallied each of their three goals on the power play, while the Rivermen notched two power-play goals, one even-strength marker, and one shorthanded goal. The teams traded power-play goals in each of the first two periods. In the opening frame, center Layne Ulmer scored for San Antonio, and left wing Peter Sejna dented the twine for Peoria. Winger Brent Cullaton (San Antonio) and blueliner Mike Mottau (Peoria) struck during the second period. In the decisive third period, the Rampage countered an even-strength goal by Rivermen center Ryan Ramsay, but they had no answer for winger Brendan Brooks' shorthanded tally at 15:43. Jason Bacashihua backstopped the Rivermen in the victory with 17 saves on 20 shots. Peoria mustered more than twice as many shots (44) as did the Rampage (20) in the game. On the power play, the Rivermen went two for eleven, and the Rampage were three for nine.
PETER, PETER, STATISTICAL LEADER
Rivermen left wing Peter Sejna now leads the team in scoring with 21 points (12 goals, 9 assists) in 13 games played. He also leads Peoria in goals (12), power-play goals (9), and shots (61). Among all AHL players, Sejna's point total is now tied for sixth-best, while his nine power-play goals tie him for first in the League.
