River Cats Rally, But Fall to Rainiers 6-4

West Sacramento, Calif. - Grant Green tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI-single, but the Rainiers scored twice in the ninth and ultimately beat the River Cats 6-4 on Thursday night at Raley Field.

Tacoma took an early lead, scoring three runs on a Mike Wilson home run to left-center field in the top of the second inning. The River Cats chipped away at the lead, ultimately tying the game in the eighth on Green's RBI-single. However, reliever Danny Farquhar allowed two Rainiers to cross the plate in the ninth, giving Tacoma the 6-4 lead. Sacramento made things interesting, loading the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Wes Timmons struck out looking, sealing the 6-4 loss.

Travis Banwart, who started for Tyson Ross, gave up four runs-three earned-four hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched. Farquhar dropped to 0-2 on the year, giving up two runs in two innings of work.

Brandon Hicks went 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI, a ninth-inning walk and his eighth home run of the season. Timmons and Michael Taylor had two hits apiece.

Josh Kinney earned the win with 1.1 shutout innings of relief. He is now 1-0 on the year.

The second game of the series begins on Toyota Family Value Friday at 7:05 p.m. at Raley Field for Sleepover night where the first 2,500 fans will receive a River Cats pillowcase. River Cats righty Graham Godfrey (5-0, 1.05 ERA) will take on Rainiers righty Jeff Marquez (4-7, 6.75 ERA).
