Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Reno, Nevada - A pair of come-from-behind efforts was not enough for the Tacoma Rainiers to avoid an 8-7 series-opening loss to the Reno Aces on Saturday night.
Tacoma, holding onto a 7-6 lead, surrendered a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Reliever Cesar Jimenez gave up a two-run double to second baseman Angel Berroa that ultimately sent the Rainiers to a fourth consecutive loss.
The Rainiers battled back from a pair of deficits earlier in the outing, beginning with a five-run rally that tied the score in the top of the sixth inning. Infielder Matt Tuiasosopo hit a three-run double with two outs in the frame that capped off a successful attempt to erase a 5-0 Aces lead.
After Reno re-took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the inning, Tacoma jumped ahead again with two runs in the seventh. Third baseman Alex Liddi hit a sacrifice fly to tie the score and outfielder Greg Halman put Tacoma on top again after scoring on a wild pitch thrown by reliever Lucas May.
Aces reliever Brian Stokes (1-1) collected the win after holding the Rainiers to two hits over a scoreless inning of work in the eighth.
The left-hander Jimenez (5-4) was dealt the loss after surrendering both runs to Reno in the eighth inning. Starter Erasmo Ramirez tossed 5.2 innings for the Rainiers, allowing six runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts.
The Rainiers (63-65) look to stop their recent losing skid they return to take on the Aces at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday. Left-hander Nate Robertson (5-5, 6.53) is slated to start for Tacoma against left-hander Zach Kroenke (8-2, 6.04) for Reno. The game will be broadcast live on South Sports 850-AM and can be streamed online at www.tacomarainiers.com.
