Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Martin Perez tossed seven shutout innings, and Julio Borbon collected four hits as the Round Rock Express blanked the Oklahoma City RedHawks 2-0 in Friday night's Pacific Coast League action at The Dell Diamond. The Express (30-39) posted their third shutout of the season and first at home. The RedHawks (40-28) still lead the season series four games to two.
Despite matching his season high with five walks, Perez was nearly unhittable and also matched his season high with five strikeouts. The lone hit he surrendered was a Brandon Barnes third-inning leadoff double that sneaked just inside the third-base line. After a walk of Jimmy Paredes, Perez used a double play and a foul out to escape the jam. He walked Angel Sanchez with one out in the fourth; Sanchez stole second and moved to third on an error, but was stranded there. Perez retired each of the last 11 batters he faced after the Sanchez walk.
Meanwhile, Borbon's leadoff single sparked a two-run first that proved to be the extent of the night's offense. Joey Butler and Yangervis Solarte had back-to-back, two-out RBI singles. Borbon was 4-for-4, matching Oklahoma City's hit total for the night. He also had singles in the second, fourth and sixth innings; he twice was erased on Luis Hernandez inning-ending double plays.
Oklahoma City threatened in the ninth when Mike Hessman and Brad Snyder opened the frame with back-to-back singles. However, Mark Hamburger retired the next three batters and recorded his second save with two scoreless innings on three hits, no walks and one strikeout.
RedHawks starter Brian Bass (1-1) shouldered the loss; he yielded nine hits and four walks over six innings with one strikeout, avoiding further damage with the two inning-ending double plays. Bass also stranded nine runners, seven of which were in scoring position. Mickey Storey retired each of the six batters he faced over the seventh and eighth innings with two strikeouts.
Butler was 1-for-3 with a walk, and Mike Bianucci doubled for Round Rock's lone extra-base hit. Barnes third-inning double was Oklahoma City's lone extra-base hit. J.B. Shuck had the RedHawks' other hit, a leadoff single in the eighth.
Round Rock and Oklahoma City continue their four-game series Saturday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. Left-hander Zach Jackson (2-7, 5.08 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express with right-hander Armando Galarraga (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to make his second start for the RedHawks.
