OAKLAND, Calif. - Outfielder-Designated Hitter Manny Ramirez has requested his outright release from the Oakland Athletics and the team has granted his request.
Ramirez, who signed a minor league contract with the A's Feb. 20, was required to serve a 50-game suspension this season for violating Major League Baseball's drug policy in 2011. While he was eligible to join Oakland May 30, he has remained with the club's Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento, where he was batting .302 (19-for-63) with three doubles, no home runs, 14 RBI, 17 strikeouts and five walks in 17 games.
