WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Jemile Weeks went 2-for-5 in his first career start at shortstop, but the River Cats dropped game three of their series against the Tacoma Rainiers by a score of 7-4 on Wednesday night at Raley Field.

The River Cats appeared to be in control from the outset, taking their largest lead of the season early in the game. In the second inning, after Stephen Vogt and Scott Moore reached base to lead off the inning, Luke Montz brought them home with a two-run double. The next batter, Daric Barton, moved Montz to third with a single. Montz came around to score on a Weeks grounder to shortstop Carlos Triunfel. Weeks eventually crossed the plate on a Shane Peterson single to center field, giving the River Cats a 4-0 advantage after two.

River Cats starter Jesse Chavez held the Rainiers scoreless through six before exiting with one out in the seventh with two men on. Reliever Jordan Norberto came on in relief and allowed both of Chavez's runners to score, along with four of his own, giving Tacoma a 7-4 lead it would not relinquish.

Despite scoring only four runs, the River Cats logged 16 base hits, stranding 10 runners. Shane Peterson led the team with four hits, finishing 4-for-5 with an RBI and a double. Michael Taylor extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a 2-for-5 night. Catcher Stephen Vogt went 3-for-4 with a run scored, and his now hitting .583 with the Cats. All in all, five different River Cats had multi-hit nights, and all nine reached base at least once.

Chavez was charged with three earned runs on nine hits and one walk with five strikeouts in 6.1 innings for a no-decision. Norberto suffered his first loss, giving up three hits, four earned runs and two walks without recording an out.

Outfielder Carlos Peguero paced the Rainiers offensively, going 3-for-4 with two runs, three RBIs, a double and a home run. Tacoma starter Andrew Carraway received a no-decision, giving up four earned on 10 hits in 4.2 innings of work. Right-handed reliever Jhonny Nunez earned the win, while former River Cat Danny Farquhar picked up the save.

The eighth and final game of this season-opening homestand comes on Jackie Robinson Day as A's top prospect Dan Straily (0-0, No ERA) takes on Rainiers righty, and former A's first-round pick, Jeremy Bonderman (0-0, 5.40 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. on Miller Lite Thirsty Thursday at Raley Field.
