Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Round Rock Express starter Brad Mills earned his second victory of the season as the Express finished off an eight-game home stand by taking 3-of-4 from the Iowa Cubs.
Round Rock wasted little heating up their bats when right fielder Jim Adduci doubled down the right field line with two outs in the bottom of the first. Second baseman Yangervis Solarte followed with a line drive into right field on a 0-2 pitch that allowed Adduci to score after avoiding the late tag by Cubs catcher Luis Flores.
Center fielder, and recent Minor League Rawlings Gold Glovę̉ recipient, Engel Beltre led off the third with a single to right and advanced to second when shortstop Greg Miclat's bloop single fell in front of a diving Ryan Sweeney in right. Adduci followed with a fielder's choice that erased Miclat from the base paths at second, putting runners on the corners and one out. Solarte again stepped to the plate with a RBI opportunity. He chopped the 0-1 pitch back to the mound, but I-Cubs starter Brooks Raley's throw to second sailed into center field, allowing Beltre to score the second E-Train run.
Mills struck out seven, setting a season-high for the starting staff and walked two as the southpaw allowed just four base runners on the night. Mills gave way to reliever Johan Yan to begin the eighth after holding Iowa scoreless for a season-high 7.0 innings on the hill. Yan retired the side in order before turning the game over to right-hander Evan Meek for the ninth.
Meek took care of Iowa in the ninth, registering his league-leading third save of the season. The Express have now tied a franchise record for the best start through the first two series of a season, posting a 6-2 record.
Raley suffered the loss, his second of the season as the I-Cubs fell to 1-7.
Round Rock will now travel away from Dell Diamond for the first time in 2013, beginning an eight-game road trip on Friday, April 12 before returning home on April 20. Tomorrow night the E-Train will send Randy Wells (0-1, 7.20 ERA) to the mound in New Orleans to face Zephyrs starter Jacob Turner (0-1, 11.25 ERA) at 7:00 p.m. (CDT). The next set of home games for the Express will include the New Orleans Zephyrs (April 20-23) and the Albuquerque Isotopes (April 25-28).
