Sky Sox Use Walk off Hits to Sweep Doubleheader

April 11, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

Colorado Springs Sky Sox (4-3) players Ryan Wheeler and Charlie Blackmon each had walk-off hits to win both games of today's doubleheader over the Tucson Padres (2-5), 5-4 and 4-3 at Security Service Field. It was the first time in team history that the Sky Sox have won both games of a doubleheader in their final at-bats.

During game one of the doubleheader, the Sky Sox struck first when third baseman Nolan Arenado doubled home second baseman DJ LeMahieu. The next two batters, Ryan Wheeler and Charlie Culberson, followed that up with two more RBI singles to make the score 3-0.

The Padres answered right away when they scored three runs of their own to tie the game during the top of the second as they took advantage of two Sky Sox errors to plate three unearned runs.

With the game tied in the fourth inning, the Sky Sox retook the lead when Arenado drove in his second run of the game with a RBI single. The lead was short lived however as the Padres again tied the game up during the next inning.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh when Ryan Wheeler stepped up to the plate with one out and blasted a home run to deep right to win the game for the Sox.

A half hour later both teams retook the field for the second game of the doubleheader. Unlike game one, both teams were held scoreless until the fourth when Padres' center fielder Jaff Decker smacked a two-run single. Tucson tacked on one more run in the inning on a Gregorio Petit single to take a three run lead. After that thought, pitcher Bobby Cassevah combined with Josh Outman (W, 1-0) to shutout the Padres for the rest of the game. Outman has now tossed eight innings over three appearances without giving up an earned run.

Colorado Springs battled back and cut the deficit down to 3-1 heading into the final inning when Padres' pitcher Brad Boxberger walked Ryan Wheeler with the bases loaded in the sixth.

In the bottom of the seventh Tyler Colvin hit a leadoff single which forced pitcher Tommy Layne out of the game. New pitcher Miles Mikolas (L, 0-1) struck out the first batter he faced, but proceeded to load the bases on an infield single and a fielder's choice. DJ LeMahieu then hit a sacrifice fly to bring cut the lead to 3-2 and bring Charlie Blackmon to the plate with two outs. With the count 1-0, Blackmon smacked a two-run triple to right-center field to score the tying and winning runs and give the Sky Sox the double dip sweep.

The Sky Sox will now head to Las Vegas to begin their first road trip of the season against the 51s. On the mound for the Sky Sox will be Tyler Chatwood (0-0, 3.86) who will face former Sky Sox' pitcher Carlos Torres (0-0, 3.18). Game time is set for 8:05 PM MDT.

Sky Sox Notes: Sox outfielder Corey Dickerson batted leadoff in the first game and singled and then followed that up with a pinch-hit infield single in the final inning of the second game to extended his team-high hitting streak to seven games... Infielder Charlie Culberson went 3-for-3 with a double and a RBI in game one... DJ LeMahieu finished the double header 4-for-7 with a RBI and run scored... It was the first doubleheader sweep for the Sox against Tucson since April 15, 2006... The walk-off homer by Ryan Wheeler in game one was the first game-ending blast since Andrew Brown did it on April 16, 2012 versus Las Vegas.
