Omaha Sweeps Isotopes in Doubleheader

The Omaha Storm Chasers (4-3) swept Albuquerque (4-3) in Wednesday's doubleheader at Isotopes Park scoring six runs in each game. Scott Van Slyke highlighted the evening staying at the top of the Pacific Coast pack in offensive categories and Ted Lilly headlined game two making a rehab start. Southpaw Will Smith earned his first win of 2013, pitching five innings of three-run baseball on six hits. Smith walked two and struck out four. Louis Coleman picked up his first save with a two-inning scoreless performance striking out two and walking one.

3B Anthony Seratelli (2-for-4) started the game's scoring with a two-RBI single in the top of the first inning scoring LF David Lough and 2B Christian Colon on the play. 1B Xavier Nady (0-for-3, BB) scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Brett Hayes (0-for-2) staking Omaha to an early 3-0 lead. The Isotopes came up with a run of their own in the next half inning. First baseman Scott Van Slyke (1-for-1, 2 BB), doubled (4) home LF Elian Herrera to draw Albuquerque to within two of Omaha.

Albuquerque tallied two more in the second inning tying the game at three. Brian Barden (1-for-3) came around to score on an Alfredo Amezaga (1-for-3) single. Herrera (2-for-4) singled home Wallach, reached via a walk, two batters later.

Omaha took advantage of a SS Dee Gordon error to take a 4-3 lead in the fifth. Colon drove in Paulo Orlando, reach via error, on a single. The Storms Chasers tacked on two more in the frame on a DH Max Ramirez (2-for-4) RBI single and a bases-loaded walk by RF Irving Falu (0-for-2). Stephen Fife suffered the loss (0-1, 3.12) for the Isotopes going 4.2 innings allowing five runs, just one earned, on six hits. He also walked one and struck out four. Alex Castellanos (1-for-3) extended his hitting streak to six games in the sixth inning, but got thrown out for the first time this year trying to steal a base (5 of 6).

Red Patterson threw 2.1 scoreless innings in relief of Fife. He struck out one, walked two and allowed three hits. Los Angeles Dodger left-hander Ted Lilly made a rehab start in game two of the doubleheader. The southpaw took the loss allowing six runs, five earned, over six innings of work. Lilly struck out five hitters to one walk at gave up a homer.

Omaha put three on the board in the first two innings. The Storm Chasers took advantage of SS Dee Gordon's third error of the doubleheader scoring LF David Lough (2-for-3) and SS Christian Colon (0-for-4). Catcher Adam Moore (1-for-2) doubled leading off the second frame and scored on a CF Willy Taveras single (2-for-3).

Two more runs came across for the Storm Chasers in the fourth as Lough drove Adam Moore and Willy Taveras home on a single. 1B Scott Van Slyke belted a fourth inning home run (3) of the year to left field cutting the Albquerque deficit to 5-1. Max Ramirez (1-for-3) added to Omaha's scoring line by blasting his second homer of the year to center field giving the Storm Chasers a 6-1 advantage.

Van Slyke (2-for-3) blasted his second home run of the game in the sixth accounting for Albuquerque's only two runs of the game. Van Slyke leads the Pacific Coast league in batting .625 (15-for-24) and ranks second with 14 RBI.

Omaha lefty Chris Dwyer earned his first win on the year (1-0, 3.27) throwing six innings allowing two earned runs on three hits. He also walked two and struck out three. Last year's pitcher of the year for Double-A Northwest Arkansas, Michael Mariot, finished the game for Omaha. The righty struck out two batters but allowed a run on a Nick Buss triple (1-for-3) in the seventh. RHP Chris Withrow tossed a scoreless inning in relief of Lilly allowing one hit and walking one.

Albuquerque looks to avoid the four-game sweep as the Isotopes and Storm Chasers close out their series tomorrow Thursday April 11 at 11:05 AM. RHP Matt MaGill (0-0, 6.57) gets his second Triple-A start for Albuquerque against Omaha southpaw Ryan Verdugo (0-1, 18.00).
