Sky Sox Sweep Doubleheader Thursday

Ryan Wheeler's walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh gave the Colorado Springs Sky Sox a 5-4 victory over the Tucson Padres in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday at Security Service Field.

Colorado Springs took a 3-0 lead after scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. The Padres responded with three runs of their own in the second on a safety squeeze bunt by Tim Stauffer and a throwing error by Sky Sox pitcher Christian Friedrich, followed by a sacrifice fly from Daniel Robertson.

Nolan Arenado produced his second RBI of the game in the fourth with an RBI single to put Colorado Springs ahead, 4-3. The next inning Tucson evened the score at 4-4 when Kyle Blanks scored on a wild pitch.

Nick Vincent surrendered Wheeler's game-winning home run and suffered his second loss of the year. Coty Woods earned the win for the Sky Sox after pitching two scoreless frames. Padres starter Tim Stauffer went 3.2 innings and scattered 11 hits, four earned runs and a walk.

Three runs in the bottom of the seventh, including a two-run triple from Charlie Blackmon, helped the Sky Sox to their second walk-off win Thursday, 4-3.

After three scoreless innings to start the game, the Padres scored three runs in the top of the fourth on a two-run single by Jaff Decker and Gregorio Petit's RBI single to right. Colorado Springs scored its first run of the game on a bases-loaded walk in the sixth, but Brad Boxberger was able to get out the jam with a double play.

D.J. LeMahieu's sacrifice fly in the seventh brought the Sky Sox within one and Blackmon's two-run triple to the center field provided Colorado Springs with the game-winning hit.

Sky Sox reliever Josh Outman won his first game of the season, while Miles Mikolas was charged with the loss. Jorge Reyes started the game for Tucson and pitched three shutout innings.
