Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Oklahoma City - The Sacramento River Cats broke a tie in the eighth inning and went on to defeat the Oklahoma City Dodgers, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
The teams played to a 1-1 tie through seven innings before the River Cats snapped the Dodgers' six-game winning streak and evened the three-game series between the teams, 1-1.
The Dodgers were held to one run in the loss, ending their stretch of six consecutive games with at least six runs scored and were held to fewer than three runs for the first time since a May 26 shutout loss at Omaha.
Sacramento's Chris Shaw connected on a RBI single for the River Cats in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 lead, but that would be the lone run allowed by Dodgers starting pitcher Daniel Corcino.
Corcino pitched a season-high 6.0 innings for Oklahoma City, holding the River Cats to one run and five hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Wednesday marked his eighth appearance holding an opponent to one earned run or less, but he did not factor into the decision.
Meanwhile, Sacramento starting pitcher Andrew Suárez held the Dodgers off the scoreboard through four innings before catcher Rocky Gale connected on a home run out to center field to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning and notch Oklahoma City's lone run of the day to tie the game, 1-1.
The home run was Gale's second of the season with Oklahoma City. The Dodgers (23-35) have now homered in a season-best seven straight games.
The River Cats (29-30) took the lead in the eighth inning. Abital Avelino led off with a double and later scored on a RBI double by Shaw for a 2-1 Sacramento advantage as Shaw drove in both of the River Cats' runs in the game.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Gale and Errol Robinson hit back-to-back singles before Zach Reks entered the game as a pinch-hitter, but struck out to end the game.
Dodgers reliever Josh Sborz (1-3) was charged with the loss, allowing the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and allowing three hits with one strikeout.
Sacramento reliever Sam Coonrod (1-4) got the win, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings for the River Cats.
With Wednesday's loss, the Dodgers fell to 4-2 in games with a morning start time, including 3-2 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
The three-game series against Sacramento wraps up at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow on a $2 Thursday featuring $2 select beer, Pepsi products and bottled water at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
Tickets are available through the OKC Dodgers ticket office located on South Mickey Mantle Drive, by phone at (405) 218-2182, or by visiting okcdodgers.com.
